Classic Horror Lives!

Screw sparkling vampires. I've been looking for a true classic horror novel in the vein of old-school King and Koontz for a long time and I finally found it! I could not put this book down - it kept me up into the wee hours of the morning two nights in a row. I couldn't wait to get back to it after getting home from work. It is so well-written and paced; the characters are so real I keep expecting to run into Nick and Robin and Alicia and the others just walking down the street. Windwalkers is true classic horror that will scare the crap out of you. Smartly researched. Excellently written. I will buy anything R. Michael Burns writes from this point forward. This author's next book can't come soon enough for me!

Creepy and Tense

R. Michael Burns has a wonderful first novel with "Windwalkers." The problem with most horror seems that when someone comes on-screen, we recognize all the stereotypes: there's the Atomic Family, and the too tough Military Couple (who will, of course, be the first to break), the beautiful femme fatale, the protagonist and the love triangle's inevitable third. The lovely thing about "Windwalkers" is how no one does what they're supposed to do; we see them enter and then behave like more than just cutouts or red-shirts, but have reactions that seem very "normal" ... normal for being trapped in a horror novel.
Additionally, the characters all seem very well thought out with distinct mannerisms and individual quirks.
The pacing is great and the tension builds and builds. I have been reading horror for nearly 30 years and there are few books I couldn't, or wouldn't, read just before bed. This was one of those books because the tension was ... delicious. And sometimes, the pay off isn't worth the price of admission. Not the case for "Windwalkers."
I found this book very enjoyable and the best new read I've gotten in a long time. I cannot wait for additional books by R. Michael Burns.

Beyond the Gore

Mr Burns' first novel is a wonderfully horrible piece of work. The characters are vibrant and well-defined, the pacing is brisk and the tension increases gradually in a never-ending vice-grip.
This is so much more than just another gory book... Horror should be about more than just blood and guts. True horror lies in the mind and this is something Mr. Burns fully understands... and delivers!
Consistent, eerily real and unrelentingly frightening, this is a great piece of writing. It left me thinking, "Please sir, I want some more!".
