Great start to a new series

I received an ARC of this title in exchange for an honest review and here it is. Kathleen Fuller has done it again--written yet another Amish novel that was simply impossible to put down, and I think this is her best one yet.

At age 16, Sadie Schrock is carrying bags of ice to her family's store when she is waylaid by a drunken Solomon Troyer, the bishop's eldest son, who drags her into a cornfield and accosts her. His younger brother, Aden, shows up but does nothing to help her and leaves. Luckily, she manages to knee him and get away, but she never tells a soul about it, fearing that no one will believe her. Flash forward 6 years. Sadie is still terrified of Sol, and still angry at Aden. She avoids all social occasions except for church. When tragedy strikes, killing her parents and seriously injuring her sister, it leaves Sadie, the eldest daughter, to deal with the aftermath alone.

Adding to her trauma, when she realizes that her father was deeply in debt, and that the hospital and rehab bills for her sister are piling up, she forces herself to ask Bishop Troyer for financial aid. He's a harsh, greedy man, and refuses to loan her money. He has a different solution, he wants Sadie to marry Sol--her worst nightmare. Aden comes to her rescue, offering to marry her instead, lying to his father and saying they'd been secretly courting, and Sadie is forced to accept what she considers the lesser of two evils.

What follows is a gripping tale that deals with tough issues, some of which are rarely seen in this genre--domestic abuse, alcoholism, greed, subterfuge, forgiveness, kindness, honesty and faith, and Ms. Fuller tackles them with great skill, sensitivity and grace. This new series is off to a great start.

A Reluctant Bride - Great read!

Kathleen Fuller has created another great and very interesting Amish book in A Reluctant Bride.

Abuse, both mental and physical, mental anguish, lies, secrets, deceitfulness by a church leader and many other issues which we don’t normally associate with the Amish lifestyle can be found in this book.

Lives are totally turned upside-down due to circumstances, not of their own doing, but created by others, family members included.

Will Sadie and Aden be able to overcome the horrors that have changed their lives, to accept love, peace, and contentment through God’s grace?

This inspirational book is one you won’t want to put down until you have finished reading the entire book. I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves to read this genre of books.

Deeper, darker themes than I expected

Not your average Amish life novel! Not that I've read a ton of them. In fact, most I've read have been those I've been sent for review from publishers or ones my mother requested I read. But yeah, of the small stack I've covered, this one has one of the more unique plots I've come across, and incorporates some darker themes not typically addressed in this type of novel.

Let me start off by warning sensitive readers that this book does open with a scene of sexual assault. Not full-on rape, but there is extremely aggressive kissing from a guy that won't take no for an answer.

Sadie Schrock is an Amish teen running an errand for her parents (who own the local general store) one day when she is accosted by Bishop Emmanuel Troyer's eldest son, Sol. Sol is clearly drunk and keeps trying to make advances toward Sadie, which understandably makes her extremely uncomfortable. Sol's younger brother Adan walks up on the scene, senses Sol is up to something bad, but quickly becomes too frightened to fight off his older brother, Instead he chooses to run off, leaving Sadie to fend for herself. Sadie gets yanked into a nearby cornfield where Sol tries to carry out a forceful gropefest, until Sadie finds opportunity to bite & kick her way to being free of him.

Six years later, everyone is in their 20s now. Sol is still a hot-tempered, sexually frustrated alcoholic, Adan's still guilt ridden over his cowardice, and Sadie is still struggling with emotional scars from the attack. Her parents want her to marry but Sadie cannot bring herself to be at ease around any men. Her mother basically forces her into attending a party but Sadie is floored when she finds out the party is being held at the Troyer home. Sadie manages to make a brief appearance before the anxiety gets to be too much and she has to go home. Shortly after the night of the party, Sadie's parents are killed in a traffic accident. Sadie, being the eldest, is left to take over the running of the store and family finances, which she comes to discover are waaaay in the red. When she goes to the bishop to ask for financial help from the community funds, his bright idea is for her to marry Sol, but the reader comes to find out that the bishop has his own less than honorable intentions for wanting the marriage. Seeing this as his moment to remedy past wrongs, Adan steps up and says Sadie already promised herself to him. Sadie obviously has her reasons to hate either match, but with limited choices, agrees to marry Adan. But how does one make it work with someone who so painfully wronged her when she most needed help?

I went into this pretty much expecting your typical Amish romance but was pleasantly surprised at how much deeper it turned out to be. This story tackles such topics as the power a sincere apology can have; finding strength to go against what you've been taught your entire life when you realize those teachings are actually based in ignorance or prejudice; struggles with alcoholism and why some people are driven to self medicate emotional wounds; and allowing people who have wronged you the opportunity to change (in turn allowing yourself to let go of the hateful feelings towards them). The story also looks at suspicious behavior among church officials, which brings up the topic of what do we do when the people we put on pedestals let us down?

The romance unfolds pretty much the way you would expect, it was more the other themes that led me to give this one a four star rating. I'd say if you've liked this type of story in the past and would like to try them again, but have maybe become burnt out by the same ol' plots being churned out in recent years, this might be a good one to try out as a refresher.

POTENTIAL TRIGGER WARNING: As I mentioned above, this book does open with a scene of sexual assault. Also, two of the characters later on in the story reveal that they were victims of child abuse.

Attractive stained glass patterns, none of them dorky

I'm just finishing the first lamp that I've made using a pattern from Northern Shades. Overall, I'm very pleased with the pattern and its instructions -- though I'm glad that I made my *first* lamp with a live teacher demonstrating the techniques.

That's not to say that you're on your own. While the book has only a single photo of each of the 25 lamps, the pictures are large and clear enough for you to get the details. The first part of the book explains the steps in lamp construction, with many black and white photos to demonstrate the process. It might have been daunting if that's all I had, however! (Or maybe I just prefer personal instruction.)

None of the designs are lame, and most of them are really pretty. The lamps range in size from an 8" diameter to 21". It's convenient to have the patterns in full size, too; you don't have to worry about inaccuracies creeping in from photocopies.

Most of all, however, I appreciate the clear shopping list for each lamp; each one is rated for difficulty, has technical specifications (such as all measurements and the number of pieces), and a materials list. You can walk into the glass shop knowning that you need 3.25 sq ft of dark green opal, 1/2 sq ft of light green, and a 2.5" vase cap.

My only caveat -- and it's not really the author's fault -- is that you have to pay attention to the availability of supplies. The lamp I chose called for kite-shaped bevels in a size that is no longer available. I did just fine by cutting kites from textured glass, but I confess that I stamped my foot in frustration, a few times, before I chose that alternative.

Great book, though. Recommended.

A book full of great instructions and patterns to follow

This is a great book for beginners and experts alike. Very well illustrated with patterns and color pictures. well worth the money. Better than many Lamp Shade instruction books out there. Very easy and simple instructions to follow. They speak at your level (Easy to Understand) instead of speaking at an expert level understandable by very few. This book will not be a disappointment.

Overly long for what it is and shallow

This book gives a number of tips on successful app development based on the writers experiences. In comparison to other books on the subject I found only a few them interesting or helpful. The majority of the book could have been boiled down to a blog post. The writer is not concise and spends a lot of the time advertising himself and his works as well as promoting other services (some of which are controversial). He even points you to his twitter page to see how a real professional does it. Except it didn't seem very professional to me.

While he claims to cover Android he gives preferential treatment to iOS and Mac only products. I ended up forcing myself through the book to scrape what little useful information there was. This "book" would have worked better as entries in his company blog or if it was about 30 pages long instead of 80 and cut all the extraneous stuff. By the end of the book, I felt like I experienced some shallow infomercial cross-selling products and giving up only a small amount of useful information. I believe the true intention of the book was self promotion of his own business and apps. This becomes more evident when you see the authors philosophy come through in his writing.

If you are interested in developing an app and are completely new to the whole thing then this book might be a cheap springboard to get you started on the path. Personally I found better options on the topic.

Nice overview from someone who has successfully put apps in the marketplace. Also good that it describes how to create an app even if you aren't a programmer and touches on every issue you might encounter - comprehensive though a short read.

Short, informative, and straight to the point

This ebook has been an excellent resource.

There are lots of tips, tricks, and other "little" tidbits of knowledge compiled in this book that make it more than worth the $2.99 you pay for it.

No, it does not promise that after reading it, you can "make apps for cheap and become a millionaire overnight".

What it does do is inform the reader of the steps from getting from point A (an App idea, or how to think of an App idea) to point B (Making money from an app) as well as throw in a bunch of handy tools and resources to help you along your way.

So good we created a course around it!

We were looking for a good textbook to use in our new online medical terminology and anatomy course at codingcertification.org then this book came out. It is the only one I know of that is designed for medical coders. I love teaching using this book it really pulls things together. Even for very new students that don't know the details of medical coding yet it gives them a preview into what they will be learning in their coding course later. I highly recommend this text.

About the Author

did we really need an 8th edition ???

Apparently, editions of this book have come out every 3 years or so, according to the copyright page. Given that it is aimed at the high school and first year undergrad level, you might wonder about the need for this. The subject is not even one like molecular biology or politics, where perhaps revisions are often needed at an introductory level of discussion.

The Applied Physics refers to how the authors strive to motivate a possibly uninterested and listless reader in the fun of physics. Daresay that most such readers will put fun in quotes. So there are many examples, and colour photos, sprinkled throughout the text, in which elementary physics is applied in daily situations. As you could expect from an 8th edition, the prose is polished and the logic is well done.

A cynic could say that an earlier edition would have been just as adequate.

POSTSCRIPT: I wrote the above when the 8th edition was the most recent. Now [2015], there is the 10th edition. What a lousy exploitation of students.

The trio is complete

I already have some books by Joseph Alexander and all of them are very good. Joseph is strong in explaining some fine details and will guide you in very understandable (easy to digest/small steps/applicable) way from ii V I to other more complicated yet still very frequent jazz chord progressions. I compared the progressions he included in this book with article "6 Common Chord Relationships that You Need to Know Now" on jazzadvice.com. Except the I vii (half-diminished) relationship all of them are included in progressions Joseph studies in his book. So, I think that he has chosen the progressions very well and I think it is better to study longer progressions than just two chord relationships.

I was afraid that this book will have big overlap with his book Fundamental changes in jazz guitar, but the overlap is rather smaller and this book together with Minor ii V Mastery and the mentioned Fundamental changes form very good trio that I encourage everyone to buy.

Consistent Quality Instruction

I'm buying this volume in Alexander's collection because previous purchases of several of his method books have really helped me develop both in the specific techniques in those books, and also with an overall approach to an emerging "curriculum" for my level, using his books. Others have pointed out the clarity of Alexander's writing and methods. I concur. There are many guitar methods, old and new. Many have quite good material. Alexander's benefit in my opinion from his skill as a teacher. I believe many of us buy method books to use without a teacher. When that is the case, the value of a given book can often rise or fall depending upon the author's ability to convey in print what a *good* teacher can do in person. I'm not suggesting books can replace teachers! However a good writer can explain concepts AND pace corresponding, effective exercises and materials so that a person can learn what is intended much more easily than otherwise would be the case. This Alexander consistently does, and does well. When matched with critical material for specific genres, it's an unbeatable combination.

I have a micro and macro suggestion or request that I hope Alexander will consider. First, within each book there are normally excellent instructions and explanations for each segment. But in the many cases where several distinct and largely independent techniques are set forth, each of which are core to the book's theme, it could be helpful to make a clear overview of more than a suggested schedule for various techniques. Do I stop practicing all elements in one chapter when working on another chapter on a separate technique? When various elements are not clearly sequential, suggestions on an approach to completing the entire book would be helpful to the independent learner. Do i simply stop practicing material in one part of the book and move on? Or try and juggle more and more of the techniques until the one book fills my available daily practice time? Alexander sometimes suggests how much time to devote to a "chunk" of exercises. I'd like to see that applied to the scope,of the book.

The second, macro, suggestion, is similar. The growing body of Alexander's varied catalog is an embarrassment of riches! I find myself wishing for curricula, or syllabus, a framework for his many useful books. Some are clearly entry level, beginner books. There are several series "Fundamentals", "The Complete..." I have a couple that mention another book in the introductions. What would be immensely helpful (and perhaps encourage further purchases?) would be a PDF "map" of how various of his books might logically fit in a student's development. Certainly there are different musical genres that set some books apart. But his collection is large now, and usefully conceived. Where might "Jazz Blues Soloing" fit if one is currently working on "Fretboard Fluency" and "Guitar Chords In Context"? Should the present volume follow the "Fundamentals in Jazz Guitar" series?

These suggestions came up because i consider myself a long term customer, student in effect, of Alexander and want to make good choices and effective plans for practicing as time goes by.

Complete primer on lead generation and nurturing

For social media marketing courses aimed at lead generation and nurturing, Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah offer a complete primer on the subject. Their Inbound Marketing book provides a cradle-to-grave formula for applying social channels, SEO and content marketing as a substitute for outdated outbound marketing techniques.

The book, in my opinion, qualifies academically as a primary reading for select undergraduate level courses focused on lead nurturing. The recommendation is based on the following:

1) As pioneers in the field, the authors provide a convincing argument why marketing should be taught using non-interrupting, permissive approaches to trust building. Especially at a time when scholars and practitioners are bombarded with complex optimization strategies, brand storytelling trends, ever changing mobile marketing strategies and costly engagement tactics, this book serves as a refresher as to why we got here in the first place. Concepts like building remarkable content, using your website as a marketing hub, designing effective landing pages and strategic placing the right calls to action are often lost in today’s overcrowded library of content marketing books.

2) The book is well organized to fit a funnel strategy especially useful for sales personnel. Early chapters deal with getting found by prospects through quality content, social media and legitimate SEO tactics. Subsequent chapters take readers through the sales conversion process while updating us on visual content and software tools. Most books take the opposite approach, thereby making the case for revenue generation rather weak. This book’s focus on attracting, tracking and building trust at the right stage in a buyer’s decision cycle is a far better approach to convincing skeptical social media adopters that inbound marketing produces results.

Actionable, theoretical, and transforming

The work of Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah have not only changed marketing forever, but changed selling as well. As a sales leadership coach, I help my clients pick up where marketing leaves off to get new business faster. Companies that embrace what the pages of Inbound Marketing explain end up transforming their entire sales model. They get a lot more prospects with a lot less effort and cost, and must reconfigure the sales team to accommodate. These new Inbound prospects have their own set of challenges from a sales perspective but it's a high-class problem for most companies. This book is as much hands-on and actionable as it is marketing theory. I particularly liked the chapters on converting visitors and prospects into leads. Getting the "calls to action" right is critical and nobody gets this better than these two Hubspot guys. I'm not sure how you can be working effectively anywhere near the marketing and sales departments at your company without the information that Brian and Dharmesh have shared with us in the pages of Inbound Marketing.

Useless expensive scam

This book is really dense, and not very useful. It's definitely not cleanly laid out, concise, nor clear in explaining the concepts. You don't need this book to learn C++, just use google. I'm pretty sure my school set up some kind of deal with the publishers of this book to force us to purchase this thing. I got it much cheaper off Amazon, but it's still ridiculously overpriced.

Utterly useless. Didn't learn a thing from it.

I bought it for my college course, and this book made no sense. It is not very understandable, and the code examples are uninformative and often incomplete. I did most of my learning with free (and ironically much easier to understand) websites.

Don't waste your money on this book. Even if your class requires it, arguably you can do without it.

Very Good 3rd Semester Level

I do not understand the numerous poor reviews of this book. This book contains a wonderful amount of detail about programming classical algorithms in C++. I do NOT think it is intended as a first book in C++. But there are plenty of those. At my university, after a year of introductory programming a student would take a course in data structures and algorithms. This book would be suitable for that level. And it does a very good job.
