The Only Book You'll Need to Save Your Skin (and pocket)

A must-have for every beauty enthusiast who spends thousands of dollars just to look for the next miracle cream because the last one didn't do what it was claimed to.
Written clearly and with a sense of humour The Beauty Bible is literally a bible, explaining with details all the 'You Shalt' and 'You Shalt Not' in cosmetics, including all the hype ingredients, what to do to really have a better skin (it works, I bought her products) and how to prevent future damage. The book also includes a How-To makeup section.
The best part in the book is reading how we are fed with lies by the salespeople and cosmetics companies. I was amazed!
I will never look at the beauty industry the same.

Information that I already knew but I am a glamour girl. If you are new to skin care and make-up then this might be a good book for you. Too elementary for me.

I wish I had this book when I was younger...sound skin care advice.

Reading this book and her other book, Don't go to the cosmetics counter without me, has completely changed how I care for my skin. The author's advice is very practical, realistic, and sane. My skin is clearer, looks much nicer, and feels comfortable for the first time since I was under the age of 10. I remember having dermatologists (yes, actual medical doctors) prescibe harsh bar soaps for cleansing, irritating creams and lotions, and not making any mention of sun protection. It's no wonder I couldn't get my face to clear up! I've probably used every product marketed towards combination skin or acne-prone skin, and none of it has helped. By reading this book, I now understand what I was doing wrong and have put together a skin care routine that actually works. It's just amazing.

Some reviewers have tried to portray this book as a pro-plastic surgery, pro-chemical products, anti-nature, ill-informed rant, but that really couldn't be further from the truth. Paula Begoun is a consumer advocate and is trying to stop people from swallowing all the marketing nonsense that the cosmetics industry feeds us. She's also trying to help people have realistic expectations for what skin care products can do for you. No cream, toner, or serum can remove wrinkles, so she explains that if you really want to remove wrinkles, plastic surgery may be your only option. It's better to know that than to keep wasting tons and tons of money on supposed "miracle" products. She also is trying to debunk another myth the cosmetics industry feeds us, that "natural" equals "good". Look at products like Origins, Aveda, etc. that claim to be "natural" solutions -- they contain miniscule amounts of "natural" extracts and all the same chemicals that all other products have. She's not advocating dousing yourself in chemicals -- she's advocating not buying into the lies these companies use to sell you products.

At any rate, I highly recommend this book to anyone who's ever had trouble with their skin and has tried everything under the sun to improve it. Granted, not every recommendation she makes will work for you, but the bottom line is that with her advice, you can make much, much smarter choices for yourself.

About the Author

S Ramnarayan, PhD, is Clinical Professor of Business at the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad, India. A PhD in Organizational Behavior from the Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA, he has been a faculty member at the Tata Management Training Centre, Pune, India, for about 5 years and later a Professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India, for about 13 years. He has also been a visiting faculty at the Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA, and Guest Professor at the University of Bamberg, Germany.

He has worked in different sectors on a variety of assignments in the areas of organization development, change, and leadership. He has carried out assignments funded by different international agencies, such as US Office of Personnel Management, Ford Foundation, World Bank, Commonwealth Secretariat, Department for International Development, and German Science Foundation. Apart from research papers, monographs, and case studies, Ram has co-authored books such as Changing Tracks: Reinventing the Spirit of Indian Railways, Change Management: Altering Mindsets in a Global Context, and Managing Organizational Change, and has co-edited books such as Life After 360 Degree Feedback, Strategic Management of Public Enterprises in Developing Countries, Organization Development Interventions and Strategies, and Managerial Dilemmas: Cases in Organizational Behaviour.

T. V. Rao is currently the Chairman of T. V. Rao Learning Systems Pvt.�Ltd, Ahmedabad. He was a Professor at Indian Institute of Management�Ahmedabad (IIMA) between 1973 and 1994 and, subsequently, Adjunct/Visiting Professor until 2014. He is the Founder President of the National�HRD Network (NHRDN), and the First Honorary Director of the Academy�of HRD, India. He was also the President of the Indian Society for Applied�Behavioral Science (ISABS). Dr Rao has worked as an HRD Advisor to the�Reserve Bank of India, has assisted the Administrative Reforms Commission�in reviewing the personnel management practices for civil services, and has also�served as a member of the HRM Review Committee of Nationalised Banks�set up by the Ministry of Finance. Dr Rao has worked as a short-term consultant�to UNESCO, Ministry of Health, Indonesia; National Entrepreneurial�Development Association, Malaysia; and the Commonwealth Secretariat,�London. Dr Rao has over 50 books to his credit, of which 15 are authored�jointly with Dr Udai Pareek.

About the Author
John Horsman graduated with honors from Cambridge University in 1958, with a master's degree in mechanical sciences (engineering). After serving in the Royal Air Force, Horsman apprenticed with David Brown, and proceeded to Aston Martin as a project engineer. He became an assistant to the managing director, John Wyer, in 1961. In 1964 Hormsan followed Wyer to Ford Advanced Vehicles Ltd., where he was responsible for the GT40 program. J.W. Automotive Engineering was created after the Ford program ended, and Horsman became director of the company and chief engineer. He went on to manage the Gulf Racing Research Comapny, which was an outgrowth of JWAE, and later moved to America to run the Mirage program for Grand Touring Cars in Phoenix, Arizona. He now lives in Tucson, Arizona, with his wife, Janet.

One of the greatest books I've ever read on racing!

I adored each page and praised the author in each and every chapter of this book for the comprehensive technical detailing he gave on the cars, the drivers, and all the important aspects of the racetracks in hand, combined with a both very pleasant and thrilling read on the details of the race itself.
Although my review is not by any means worth of this book, I shall recommend it to any car-nut, particularly to 60s-70s sports car race fans or, for any fans of the cars (GT40, 917, Mirage...) and drivers (Ickx, Bell, Redman, Rodriguez,...) that have become legends, mostly thanks to this great era of racing.
This is, so far, my favourite book about these mad but magnificent years of motorsport, when cars where faster than the Grand Prix cars and also the drivers from Formula 1 were present in many of this races, giving the competition a very high level.
It's also very interesting to learn how an engineer (the author himself) learns and grows from being a newbie in racing, starting in Aston Martin in the 50s, to start a whole new team with the charismatic John Wyer, race and develop some of the most iconic Sports Cars ever to run in Le Mans and anywhere (the GT40 and 917K), to finally becoming a team boss for one of the most successful teams in sports car racing.
All of this condensed in a book of which you can never have enough. I'll be looking forward to re-read it soon, a rarity in me, by the way.

Another Gem of a Book about Sports Car Racing's Golden Era

This book is definitely a 5-star addition to the growing collection of books about sports car racing in the late 60's and early 70's. I "grew up" in this era and didn't realize until much later what an amazing time it was for racing. I've got the 917 books by Morgan and by Hinsdale. I have the original "Excellence was Expected" by Ludvigsen, and I recently bought Vic Elford's excellent autobiography and Jo Siffert's biography. Heck, I even bought Keyser's "A French Kiss with Death" about the making of the movie "LeMans." "Racing in the Rain" ranks among the very best. It is loaded with 400 pages of behind the scene stories and is packed with tremendous photogaphy, including two previously unpublished ones of the famous "Horsman tail" for the 917 and a fascinating story of how it came to be in that pre-computer diagnostic era. Aerodynamic designs through brains and clever observation instead of computer analysis. Uttlerly fascinating and great reading. If you're a true road racing fan, you must add this book to your collection!

An Outstanding Book on Motorsports

This is probably one of the best books ever published on motorsports of this era. John Horsman has included great technical details on the Aston- Martins, Ford GT-40s, Porsche 917s, and GTC Mirages in this book that cannot be found elsewhere. Also interesting are the inside explanations of why certain races were won or lost and the ever- changing rules of the sanctioning bodies. Personal anecdotes of drivers, team members, and of racecar development work make interesting reading.

Altogether a valuable reference work and a well- told story of what professional racing was like. Good work, John! by Neil Albaugh

An economics book for everyone.

This book gave me the basic economic understanding I was looking for to make sense of the world today. Yes it's biased toward the left wing, yes it really only talks about the US economic history, but it quite obvious about being biased and most importantly, uses this as a vehicle for explanation. As such, it teaches more because of its perspective, rather than being limited by it.

While somewhat educational on the theory of economy, it's really an examination of the current (post Great Recession) economy

Really a treatise on why the USA economy is where it is after the Great Recession. Does go into economic theory but its strength lies in reviewing policies implemented in the USA. Because basic economic theory (which should be understood before reading this comic) should be already part the reader's knowledge before reading (see Yoram Bauman and Grady Klein's Cartoon Introduction to Economics Vol-1 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0809094819/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_55 and Vol-2 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0809033615/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_53), this isn't necessarily where to start so to grasp economic theory. For a guy like me who has virtually no background in the subject, the information is somewhat unsettling but expected (a lot of the information has been mentioned-in-passing on radio, television, and various printed media.)

Clear without being simplistic, one of the most accessible accounts of the evolution of economics thought I have seen so far.

I have been reading about history and economics for years and as economics books this one just nails it.
I have to admit I was quite weary of reading a comic book on such a serious subject but the author actually nailed it very well: there is no concession to clarity or significant cut corners in there.
It covers the history of the economic thought to the present day and although the author is left-leaning (at least in his economics view) he made a very good job at being balanced until at least the 80's and Reaganomics, which he prefaces explicitly by stating that what was coming was necessarily colored by his views.
If what you want is a 4-hours read that gives you a pretty good idea of the evolution of economic thought including much History (not of just the US) without being tedious, this is a great choice.
I have ordered three additional copies of which I already gave two away and I am most likely to buy another few copies.
