Great, common-sense ideas and goals for troubled times with some humor thrown in!

I found this book to be really helpful in terms of setting some reasonable goals for myself while coming out of my own "era of overspending". Well-written and often humorous, the author manages to convey the importance of saving without being a bore or being unrealistic about what's possible today. While I certainly don't find myself in ideal financial shape right now, the ratios have provided me with great goals to work toward, and helped me be conscious of where my money goes and what I'd like (and will need) it to be able to do for me later.

Sensible, thoughtful, and filled with common sense approaches

Kudos to the writer for making it so clear and within everyone's reach to be successful with finances. As more people read this work, we will slowly resolve the problem of financial dependency so pervasive in society today. This work should be found in the self-help area of bookstores. It is an easy read and a definite entry point for everyone seeking basic financial awareness.

Mr. Farrell offers a very clear explanation of how everyone should address financial issues. If more people had read this book prior to the phenomenal crisis we currently endure, none would have lost their homes, their cars, or their job. Private industry and banks would not have fired anyone, instead they would still be hiring more workers. We would remain the pillar of financial strength that irresponsible behavior destroyed.

The author's argument places the financial responsibility for our future needs squarely on each of us. He provides the reader with a blueprint for the meeting of long-term financial goals. His philosphical position is almost a Libertarian argument--except for the acceptance of Social Security as a pillar of virtue, which most Libertarians would argue against, especially in light of the abuses perpetrated by the ever-increasing waves of pillagers in Congress. Nonetheless, his suggested cures for the ills of the system as we face them today are sensible and should be heeded with immediacy.

The work is well conceived, albeit a tad repetitive at times, yet understandably so; most individuals tend to forget from one minute to the next the importance of thoughtful financial planning and a strict adherence to a plan. It all revolves around the notion of becoming a capitalist who lives by lending money to others instead of remaining a laborer forever who must do some type of work to live from its wages. It addresses the most salient points for financial solvency at any age: education, home ownership, credit card debt, and transportation, all within the money ratios that are the focus of his work.

"Charlie," as he often refers to himself in the book, provides a clear path to the financial success that most careful planners would dream to accomplish as they traverse across the different stages of life. The goal in the end is to target funds for retirement, when most expect to kick back and enjoy a better and more relaxing lifestyle, free of FICA contributions and lower taxation in general. Sacrifices and difficult decisions must be made along the way; but in the end, the work's solutions are fruitful and conducive to a successful outcome. If carefully adhered to individually with rigor and stalwart determination, the book's premises will result in a self-reliant retirement plan that would benefit more than the individual and his family.

Finally, financial planning that makes sense!

For years I have struggled to figure out what my family should be doing with our finances. I knew I wanted to be able to retire with a decent lifestyle, but had no idea how to do it. The primary reason I struggled is because of my deep distain for anything having to do with numbers. It all just seemed too difficult for me. When I read this book, it all became clear to me. Everything is laid out in clear and simple terms in a way that even a financial dim-wit like me can understand. Unfortunately for me, I read this book about 20 years too late! The good news is that I still have some time to get back on track, and I can't feel too guilty, because the book just came out. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a clear and simple formula for planning for retirement. I would also recommend that you give this book as a graduation gift to anyone you care about who is graduating from college! Having this book then would have made a big difference in my financial future.

I like this book a lot actually. It covers just enough in each chapter to give you a good overview. You will certainly have to do your own learning outside of this book if you want to dive deeper than scratching the surface for a particular platform. However, this is a great resource for an introduction to Android, iOS, and Windows Phone.

My only concern with this book is a whole chapter dedicated to App Inventor and Phone Gap....both of these are basically useless when it comes to really programming for any of the platforms. I would have much rather seen an extra chapter for each platformed that focused on more advanced programming examples.

Even though this book is outdated by a few years, this still seems to be the best text to introduce all three platforms. Author updates this link with more recent information:[...]. Book is written very nicely.

I wouldn't recommend buying this book now. I have it for a class and almost everything is outdated and doesn't work anymore. If they release a new version it could be good but the newest one is already outdated. Most of the work you do will be searching online for answers.

The most exhilarating text !

I have a personal small "library" of scientific books. This book has to be, by far, the most well structured, well explained, systematic and exhilarating read. I would rate this book as number 1 among possibly 50 similar books that I have read. If you are technically enthusiastic, would like to know about anything and everything pertaining to science and have a jolly good read at that, I would highly recommend this book. Asimov is gifted as a writer, in that he takes the most complex concepts and explains it in such a way, that a first-time reader on the subject feels confident of his/her understanding. If you have lots of time (900 pages of size 10 text!), are a thinker and want to begin to understand the great works of genii ranging from archimedes, galileo, newton and einstein, this book is for you! Well done to a man long gone. He leaves a legacy of genius !

Just a great book

I was a young reader and my personality was still not set. So many "bad" books kept pulling me in the wrong directions. I read all bestsellers though they taught me nothing. A day came when I had nothing to read and I happened to come across this book in my elder brother's library. It was written long before I was born. Yet, as I was truly bored, I began to read it and I was hooked before long. The world of Science was visible to me and, for the first time in my life, it looked attractive. I can truly say that this book changed my life. I now am completing my pre-med degree and will be off to medical school before long. I have never been happier; Science has become my life. Thank you Isaac Asimov.

Update for anyone interested 12/20/2011:
Ha! I cannot believe that was me! I had such an odd, self-important way of writing back then. I graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. in biology with minors in chemistry and English. Managed to get sidetracked, became somewhat of a hippie, and did not go to medical school. Don't freak out yet! Science is still my religion, but now it is specifically environmental science. I was accepted into a lovely graduate program and am on the verge of finishing my thesis. Have sent out a few applications for phd programs in ecology. Overall: toss aside your Da Vinci Codes and whatnots, kids, because science will rock your world!

My First Choice Science Text

In my opinion, Asimov provided the most entertaining and readable scientific "texts" around, and this comprehensive volume is his best. Despite the fact that I am a layperson, and this book is nearly 1000 pages, I devoured it and longed for more. If you are not a lover of the sciences when you begin Asimov's Guide to Science, you will be when you finish! Anyone 12 years and older should read this book. It will change the way you look at the universe.

reS-Gr 2-Santa has a hard and fast rule: if your naughty deeds total more than your nice ones, you get NO PRESENTS. His son, Peter, spending his second year on the naughty list, doesn't think this is fair. So, he hijacks the sleigh and reindeer and takes all of the naughty kids to the North Pole to plea their cases before Santa. The youngsters admit to unkind acts, say they are sorry, and offer to do something thoughtful for the injured parties. One by one, the names are eliminated from the list. Happy for the others, Peter wishes he could do something nice and Santa tells him that he has by helping the children and their families. This simple, humorous story goes straight to big childhood concerns-who keeps track of naughty and nice, how the present issue is decided, and if you are an OK kid even if you are naughty sometimes. Durand's witty primitive paintings are full of fun and detail with oddly shaped people and reindeer enjoying a satisfying Christmas in which there are only nice kids.-A. C.

Naughty or Nice?......

It was the part of the Claus family job, son Peter hated most, separating the naughty kids from the nice. He knew first hand what it was like to be on the naughty list, since he was on it last year. No presents under the tree. "Does it have to be that way? Can't naughty kids get gifts too?" Santa was firm. "I didn't make the rules. More nices than naughties and you go on the nice list and get lots of presents. More naughties than nices and you go on the naughty list and get nothing. That's the way my father taught me to do it when he was Santa, and the way his dad taught him." But to Peter, it just didn't seem fair. Santa didn't even know what those poor "naughty" kids did to get themselves on the list, in the first place. So late that night, he hitched the reindeer to the big sleigh, and set off on a mission to help those naughty children before it was too late..... Lawrence David has written a delightful holiday story with a gentle message about fairness, forgiveness and saying you're sorry, that won't be lost on young readers. His simple and straightforward text is beautifully complemented by Delphine Durand's charming and humorous childlike, geometric illustrations that are bold, bright, and wonderfully expressive. Youngsters will enjoy poring over the artwork and finding all the special little details in each picture. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Peter Claus And The Naughty List is creative and original, a nice addition to your holiday picture book shelf, and a wonderful read-aloud story the entire family can share, discuss and enjoy together.

Charming Christmas Tale for Young and Old Alike

What do I love best about this book? Is it the whimisical illustrations? The wonderful story? The infusion of myth and merriment into a charming tale that will please both young and old? All of the above!
This story is deliciously naughty and nice with Santa Claus' boy going to help the naughty children of the world explain their bad deeds, but along the way, he discovers something about his own naughty antics.
This should be heralded as a classic, right along with Rudolph and Frosty.

With a happily contorted version of the Santa Claus mythos, Mr. David has made a delightful story with a great outlook on human nature. This book is a perfect antidote for those who run screaming when being force-fed the mantra that 'Polar Express' is a modern Christmas classic. It avoids cliche, makes one laugh, and has the admirable quality of having likeable characters, including the independently-minded hero.

This was the absolute worst E-book I've ever used in my academic life. No page numbers and no numbers to find questions. do not waste your time purchasing this ebook as it will not help you find your assignments. I would love to be able to get my money back, but for me it may already be too late. However, you still have time before you WASTE YOUR MONEY. DO NOT BUY this book as an ebook.
Write today's date and time down at least somebody had the courtesy to WARN YOU. Don't do it.

Great space opera brought to Earth

Howard was in contact with Saucerians from the various worlds of the Solar Federation long before the current crop of contactees started channeling members of the Galactic Federation, and in this book he details his adventures with various Venusians, Saturnians and Martians. He even documents his travel to a lunar base over a decade before Apollo astronauts landed there. A great read, with illustrations from out of this world.

This is one of my favorite books

This book will go into my personal collection of spiritual books. Howard Menger has had some very interesting experiences with our brothers and sisters from other planets, and I greatly enjoyed his writing style. I have read it one time, and I will probably read it again in a few weeks. I highly recommend this fine book to anyone who is on the spiritual path.

My favorite piano method,

I have used all the piano methods for my 20 + students. I like this one best because of the challenges and the quality of the tunes. Harmony right away. No long periods of horizontal music with minute little advances. The very bright and physically adept student is happy with this - and it makes them feel like they are really making music - not just playing baby tunes. I especially like it for 8-12 year olds. These kids don't need the drawings and the big notes and can get down to the business of learning for learning's sake. I like the no-nonsense approach. I find it hard to locate this method in local stores - so order from Amazon. I hope they do not take it off the market - my favorite for the right students. Also a great supplement for adult methods with the chord approach - which get boring. Adults need some variations and I find this is a great accompaniment to them.

I got this book for my 10 and 12 year old children. Its very comprehensive for both. My 12 year old plays the french horn and trumpet and its great for her yet perfect for my 11 year old who has no musical training. It teaches theory and goes step by step learning keys and reading music. The exercises add to each other bit by bit and does not skip around. You can take it slow or breeze through depending on your musicality and prior training. I recommend this book for beginners and anyone who has prior music training.

Great for piano lessons

My daughter's piano instructor has uses this book for her private piano lessons. I'm usually present at the lessons and the book appears to have a nice approach to learning the scales and building upon your playing. It gradually eases the student from the most basic notes to full songs relatively easily. I personally know nothing about playing piano, so I'm simply going by what I observe. So far, this book has worked great for us. Excellent choice for a beginning pianist, especially younger children.

ignores composition of UN Security Council

The book describes the nature of international organisations since the 19th century. These range from trade unions to groupings like the League of Nations and the United Nations. For the latter, the driving force was collective security and a desire, at least by most members, to avoid war through negotiations.

Unsurprisingly, a lot of the book is devoted to studying the UN. It looks at the veto rule in the Security Council and the problem of its abuse. But there is no discussion about the composition of the Security Council itself; especially the 5 permanent members. Keep in mind that the first version of the book was written in 1956 and this edition is from 1983. During this time, developing nations like Brazil, China and India were not economically significant on a global scale. So there was less imperative to take another look at the makeup of the Council.
