Fabulous cupcake resource

I picked this book up at our local independent bookstore with the intention of making cupcakes with my kids and their friends. There are plenty of traditional and delicious favorites in here, but also some decidedly adult (cocktail cupcakes!) and many really interesting new recipes as well.
The family raves over the good old standbys (made fresh with the use of vanilla bean rather than extract), my book club loves the lighter selections - many of which put berries to excellent use, and my Ladies Who Lunch have enjoyed my cocktail cupcakes. There are even a few vegan cupcake recipes in there! Truly there is something for everyone - even those who may not identify themselves as cupcake connoisseurs.
The book was written from a British perspective (Lola is based in London), but the measurements come in both metric and imperial (US standard). If you're in the market for an excellent go-to cupcake resource, no matter where you reside you will do well with Making Cupcakes with Lola.

The Perfect Bible

I purchased this bible after using my moms for a while. I love how there's an index in the back that breaks down passages by situation. This has really helped me through some rough times. This is really a must have.

This is a wonderful collection of objects, truly an artistic selection of eye-popping, category-crossing, often beautiful things. Each object also has a very very nice description, laying out who made and why, and giving an idea of how it functions. You get battery-operated tongues - think of the uses you can put that to! - and scores of traditional objects such as funery slippers and straw hats or cow-tail medicinal brushes. It is a feast for the imagination, funny, and provocative.
Recommended for industrial designers and art lovers alike.

Wonderful one of a kind children's book!

This book is a great resource to families dealing with grandparent divorce, and there is nothing out there like it. The characters are sweet and easy to relate to, and the cues for parents are very helpful. The book goes over struggles kids will face while dealing with their grandparents' divorce and how parents can help them through it. The illustrations are really cute, too! I will definitely recommend this book to any family dealing with grandparent divorce!

Helpful and cute children's book.

This book is a perfect cross section of a cute children's book and a helpful children's book. It's a unique situation that I don't think has been touched much, but can be very hard for kids and parents alike. It can be hugely helpful for parents, who themselves are going through a tough situation. It helps the children understand the situation more, and helps the parents find a way to talk through it. It's something that kids want to read too, because the characters are adorable and the illustrations are beautifully done. It's a perfect cute and helpful mix. Everyone will love it.

When Grandparents Divorce

Ari and Isaac just found out that their grandparents are getting a divorce. Things will be different, grandma will have her own place without grandpa and visa versa. This makes the kids very sad and confused. It just won't be the same as when they lived together.

Does that mean that mom and dad will get a divorce?

How can we make this easier for children so they can still enjoy time with each grandparent?

This book will help your child understand a little better. It explains what you should tell them. It will still be fun to visit grandma at her house and doing the fun things they did before it would just be without grandpa. Then there are special things they like to do with grandpa and they will still be able to do those things even without grandma.

I had never really thought about the effect it would have on a child when their grandparents divorce. Now I definitely see that it would confuse a child to the point of pulling away from the situation because they weren't sure how to react.

Katie tells the story in a way so that the child will be more comfortable around the grandparents. They need the assurance that they are still loved by both grandparents. I liked that the author provides activities for the child to help them express their feelings about the divorce. Then there is a question and answer guide in the back of the book that offers information and support to the parents.

I highly recommend this book.

A Twist on Familiar Orphan Story

As a Korean person, I'm quite familiar with the orphan story tradition that exists in Korean culture and literature. When I was a kid, my parents told me they picked me up under a bridge when they wanted to chide me for some mischief, and I used to cry. It may sound strange to westerners, but the 'orphan under a bridge' is a familiar archetypal story that's been passed on through generations through oral storytelling as well as narrative ones. Korea is a country that's been through countless attacks and subjugations by other countries and empires, and the possibility that a child could suffer the plight of being an 'orphan under the bridge' strikes a particular chord of fear and pity for the Koreans.
Linda Sue Park does a fabulous job of taking this traditional Korean story module as a catalyst for a well-developed tale of triumph of a boy who shouldn't have overcome the odds but did. Placing the protagonist boy in 12th century Korea was a shrewd move, as it was the era when Korean art was deemed to be in its apex, especially its pottery. As we follow Tree Ear, the hero of the book, trying to overcome many obstacles to become the master potter, we also become aware of the rich culture and tradition of an exotic land.
It's a tribute to Ms. Park that she does this without sentimentalizing and 'orientalising' the world that she depicts. (Although I question the translation of the boy's name into 'Tree Ear', a la Amy Tan) We only get a deeply moving tale, a bildungsroman of a boy who came into his own despite the odds. It's a common story structure, but it works unfailingly through Ms. Park's convincing and inspired narrative and the previously uncharted terrain of 12th century Korea. Very well done. Get this book for your kids but steal it away from them at night when they're sleeping and read it yourself.

Another Place; Another Time

A short time ago I wrote about how I find the Booker Prize to be one of the few awards that consistently recognizes truly excellent books. The other award that I think does as well is the Newbery Medal. As always, there is varying quality even among the winners of this award but I found this book to be one of the best of the best.
First of all, I always appreciate books that take me to places I've never been. Certainly, this story of twelfth century Korea does that. Additionally, it describes various processes of pottery-making, something else with which I was not very familiar.
Most importantly, however, this is a story filled with wonderful characters. Tree-ear is an orphan who lives beneath a bridge with an old man named Crane-man. Slowly, Tree-ear works his way into the family of a master potter, Min & his wife, by doing work which the old potter now finds difficult. Ultimately, Tree-ear is sent on a long journey to the capital with a sample of Min's work to obtain a royal commission but, when the samples are destroyed along the way, he can only take a shard of the former pottery to the commissioner.
This is a beautiful story which is well worth reading--and that includes any "adults" who might be reading this. Remember, if you can't read a "children's book" and enjoy it, then your child should probably not be reading it either.

This book deserved the Newbery

I am 12 years old, and I liked this book a lot. Once I started reading it, I couldn't stop. I ended up finishing it in about an hour and fifteen minutes. Even though the plot is very simple, there's a lot of messages inside of it. It is similar to the box that Tree-Ear finds that is simple on the outside, but inside it has many other boxes in a complex layout. For example, when the potter Min's wife discoveres Tree-Ear is saving the lunch he receives from her, she refils his bowl even when he hids it. When Tree-Ear finds the re-filled bowl, instead of being greedy the next day and eating the whole thing because he knows it will be refilled, he only eats half. Tree-Ear and Crane-Man don't have much, but they are thankful for the little that they do have. I think this book is a very good book for children, and I think it deserved to win the Newbery award.

Great, interesting book for adult learners

I have used this book for adult literacy tutoring and my students have enjoyed it. These well-written stories describe individuals who have overcome tremendous odds. Each story is unique--everyday people with all sorts of challenges such as drug abuse, language, dyslexia, and so on are profiled in realistic ways. The questions after each story are good indicators of comprehension, and the writing exercises are also very helpful. Excellent book.

A marvellous text!

I have used the text by Scharf for a graduate level course in detection and estimation theory a large number of times now, and I am really pleased with the book.
Scharf's text has its main strength in the consistent use of linear algebra and matrix theory. As a result, the author is able to provide the reader with beautiful and insightful geometrical explanations of most key concepts relating to detection and estimation. The geometrical view is unique to this text, and I have found that the students benefit a lot from the geometrical framework when trying to understand advanced topics.
Scharf's book is not necessarily easy to read, but once the necessary time and effort has been invested, the result is advanced knowledge and insight of a permanent value. The book contains very few errors, and it contains a sufficient number of relevant problems.
