K. Chayne is a graduate from Washington University in St. Louis, where she studied Psychology, Environmental Studies, and Marketing. She has a certification in Culinary Nutrition by Natural Gourmet Institute, and she is currently the Chief Marketing Manager of Ethical Writers Coalition.

Through her multidisciplinary studies and her multicultural background, Chayne developed a particular interest in the relationship between human health and world sustainability--an interest that eventually led her to write her debut nonfiction book, Thrive. By proposing a broadened perspective on health--one that encompasses the health of the mind, body, and our collective environment--Chayne hopes to empower her readers to cultivate meaning and create sustainability in all areas of life.

"Thrive" is a gem! It is truly a well-rounded introduction to sustainable living for the general population

Wow... I thought I was living a pretty healthy life until I read Thrive. I work out regularly and I don’t eat a lot of artificial or packaged foods. But Chayne has shown me how important taking care of both our mental and environmental health is as well, beyond just fitness & dieting which I was more focused on. The biggest takeaway for me is that we need to consider the “indirect health effects” of our consumer choices when trying to improve our health as well, like how our food choices affect our planet which then affect us, or how toxic chemicals from our clothes can pollute our water and then harm us.

As a busy person and someone who is relatively new to "sustainable living," this book has been the perfect straightforward, fluff-free guide to help me get started and become more conscious in all aspects of my life. With the way the book is sectioned off topic by topic, I liked how I could easily skip the parts I felt I already knew and dive right into other sections.�

If you’re thinking about getting this book, my suggestion from reading other reviews would be this:�

If you’re already an environmental or health expert and are looking for more than a fun/leisurely read, you might be disappointed. But if you want a well-rounded intro to sustainable living, want to take health more seriously and approach it in a more wholesome way, or just want a feel good read, I think you’d find it really valuable like I did.

The book is fairly interesting, but I didn't find ...

The book is fairly interesting, but I didn't find any of the insights in it particularly eye-opening--perhaps because I already consider myself an environmentalist and try to apply that to every aspect of my life. My main problem with this book is that it is all for environmental consciousness when buying clothing, body products, etc, but says NOTHING about the environmental impacts of animal agriculture. I don't understand how a book can claim to be a guide to an environmentally conscious lifestyle without so much as mentioning animal agriculture's devastating effects on the environment.

The books' title indicates the book for use in the Professional Engineering exams. However, it is also an excellent reference for practicing engineers or students taking wood design related courses. I have searched for an introductory reference in timber design for a while...this book is a definte buy.

I bought this with a gift card given to me for my birthday, having been a fan of all three film franchises. I completely loved the comic! Without giving anything away, all I will say is that if you are a fan of these movies, then you will be satisfied.

Finally a great vs crossover

The first Freddy vs Jason vs Ash was good, this blows it out of the water. Any fan of either Freddy or Jason will love all the back story and all the effort they put into knowing the history of both of these killers.

Adding our resident ego maniac hero Ashley J. Williams to the mix just makes it that more explosive and missing that with the history of the killers makes it beyond good into greatness. I will admit to a bias for all of these guys and the Evil Dead series as a whole.

But any fan of any of these should read both of these books but should OWN this one for sure.

Ash/Freddy vs Jason vs Ash: The Nightmare Warriors This book was everything i thought it would be and then some for those who dont want to know what happen dont read this review just turn away now..... for those who are still there listen up if you are a fan of the last Freddy vs Jason vs Ash book and want to know what happen in the second and final book order this now if you love the Evil Dead films, old Jason and the old Freddy movies (not the remakes because they have nothing to do with the story only A Nightmare On Elm Street part 1-6 and the first nine Jason films are canon to this paperback book collection both this and its predecessor takes place after Freddy vs Jason movie) then you will love how accurately they paid attention to the story and how they brought back some of the survivors of all three franchise example Alice from A Nightmare On Elm Street is here along with her now more grown up son Jacob and Tommy From the jason franchise is here just to name a few its a fun read a satisfying end that closes a chapter in what is the best horror crossover since Freddy vs Jason the only sad thing is this was not a movie ah well probally would have cost too much..... to do it right anyway

Other topics covered are the problems of duplicating the cube, trisecting the angle, and squaring the circle; the construction of regular polygons; the solution of cubic and quartic equations; the structure of finite fields; and the 'fundamental theorem of algbra'. The last is proved by almost purely algebraic methods, and provides an interesting application of Sylow theory. In order to make the treatment as self-contained as possible, and to bring together all the relevant material in a single volume, I have included several digressions.

Different Editions and an Errata

I just wanted to point out the following:

* The reviews dated prior to the year 2003 refer to earlier editions of the book. The current (3rd) edition was rewritten extensively.

* A list of corrections is available on the Internet. The review guidelines discourage posting URLs, but an internet search with the keywords "stewart galois theory errata" should find the location. You need a postscript reader to view the errata, but a free one is available online.

Accessible intro to field extensions and Galois theory

This book is aimed at upperlevel undergraduates, presumably math majors. I'd say that's about right; it assumes the reader is familar with the basics of groups, and the proofs strike a good balance between rigor and informality.
The book is also accessible to people who have been out of school a while, but are still interested in math. I had to read it more than once to get comfortable with some of the ideas, but Stewart does a good job of providing examples that are understandable given some familiarity with college algebra.
I had some heard about the proofs of the impossibility of trisecting the angle, but had little concept of how that was done. This book made it clear. I had also heard that there was no general formala for solving quintic polynomials, but I was surprised to learn that the solutions couldn't even be expressed by radical equations. I was pleased to be able to follow the proofs.
After reading / working my way through the book at least twice, I feel comfortable enough to tackle more ambitious works. Michio Kuga's "Galois' Dream" adds many new concepts, and illustrates Galois Theory in a different application. Seeing Galois theory in another context has been helpful in understanding what is necessary to being able to use it.

Textbook plus Popularisation

A lovely book that takes time to show off the applications of Galois theory. The expanded sections in the second edition really make a beautiful job of giving a historical and mathematically meaningful context to the central concepts.
However the main body of the work is a quite traditional textbook account that explorers the abstract idea of Galois groups over general fields - leaving the reader to inject the meaning and context. Someone, somewhere is capable of making the central concepts of Galois theory as natural and obvious to the reader as it was to Galois. But this isn't the book.

About the Author

Mich�lle E. Mor Barak, PhD is a professor at the University of Southern California with a joint appointment at the School of Social Work and the Marshall School of Business. She holds the Lenore Stein-Wood and William S. Wood professorship of Social Work and Business in a Global Society, Chairs the Social Work and Business Program, and is the director of the Doctoral Program. Professor Mor Barak received numerous awards of distinction, including a Fulbright award, the Lady Davis award for international exchange scholars, the University of California Regents Award, and the Franklin C. Sterlin Distinguished Faculty Award for Research and Scholarship.

She has been invited to give keynote addresses and received grants to lead several prestigious conferences around the world, such as a keynote address at the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) global diversity conference, the Rockefeller Foundation’s award to lead an international conference on global workforce diversity in Bellagio, Italy, and the Borchard Foundation’s grant to lead a global think tank of scholars on diversity management at the Chateau de la Bretesche, France. A principal investigator on several large research projects, she has published numerous articles in the areas of global diversity, workforce inclusion and work-life balance, and has authored two other books: Social Networks and Health (Garland, 1991) and Social Services in the Workplace (Haworth, 2000).

Got annoyed on page 20

Well, this is a textbook. So the people don't really have a choice on whether to purchase this or not. But I will tell you, it's not very well written. There are tons of typos and grammatically errors in it. And basically the author keeps repeating the same thing over and over and over in the book. "Diversity gives organizations a competitive advantage." Ok. I got it when you stated that on page 3. And I appreciated the refresher on page 10. Got annoyed on page 20. Then got even more annoyed at all the subsequent restatements of the same thing. If there was Cliff Note version, it would probably be only 1 page long. Sorry. I know you have to read it for school and don't have a choice, but you're in good company with the rest of us who were already forced to read it.

Employee cohesion and high morale in the workplace are generally accepted, along with quality products and services, as contributing to a company's healthy bottom line. To be successful in today's complex multinational and multicultural as well as domestic work environments, however, businesses must concurrently manage new thresholds of employee, supplier and customer diversity at several levels all at once.

A welcome addition to the emerging dialogue on diversity management is Mich�lle Mor Barak's inclusive workplace model. In Managing Diversity: Toward a Globally Inclusive Workplace (Sage Publications, 2005), she encourages work organizations to adopt a new perspective on diversity. Building on its expanding importance to the workplace amid new socio-demographic and legislative trends, Managing Diversity comprehensively addresses the corporate role for inclusiveness as part of workforce management as well as at community, state and federal, and international levels.

In essence, the inclusive workplace is a layered ideal, each level of which complements the others and advances corporate effectiveness. At the workplace level, it honors individual and inter-group differences, while at the community level it also contributes to its surroundings, regardless of whether profits are directly realized. Within the wider environment, it expresses concern for and supports advancement of such disadvantaged or marginalized groups as immigrants, women, and the working poor. And in the instance of multinational companies, it willingly collaborates with individuals, groups and organizations across national and cultural boundaries.

Of note is the practical relevance threaded throughout the book, such as the important distinction that Mor Barak makes between visible (i.e., observable differences) and invisible diversity (such not readily apparent attributes as religion, education, tenure or world view). While discrimination toward either kind is unacceptable, the nature of invisible diversity presents human resource managers the added challenge of a consideration that is difficult to monitor.

A portion of Managing Diversity delves into the complex web of skills, knowledge, and values that combine to shape the inclusive workplace. From an overview of diversity-related employment legislation around the world, to theoretical perspectives on diversity and its meaning in different cultural contexts, to cross-cultural communications, the book is filled with colorful, well-researched examples. The inclusive workplace model itself, however, is applicable to work organizations large and small, transcending specific industries or where they are headquartered in the world.

In this excellent text, Mor Barak, who holds joint appointments at the University of Southern California Schools of Social Work and Business, has made a substantial and unique contribution to the human resources and management literature.

I needed this book for my Working with Diversity class, however I have been using it as more of a reference book. The information is pretty clear and there are plenty of examples to explain concepts. It is a decent book overall.

There are two different revolutions happening right now on the Web: An explosion of interest in design and a renaissance in data science and visualization. RaphaelJS, a Javascript library that allows one to easily draw shapes and images in the browser without plugins, sits exactly at the junction of these movements. While design used to be mainly about using your mouse to sketch out shapes in programs like Adobe Illustrator, what we're seeing now is that designs are increasingly rendered using code-- the core purpose of Raphael. These dynamic graphics can respond to user movements in both browsers and on mobile devices. I also think that graphical programming is a wonderful way for those new to coding to get up and running, since one can immediately start seeing the fruits of his or her efforts on the screen. I wrote this book assuming as little prior knowledge of web graphics and Javascript as possible, and my hope is that it be both accessible to newcomers and informative for veterans who want to get up and running quickly.

Chris Wilson is a journalist and developer at Time.com. Prior to joining the magazine, he was a "visual columnist" at Yahoo News and a senior editor at Slate, where he founded Slate Labs, which won the 2010 Ad Age Media Vanguard Award. He is a 2005 graduate of the University of Virginia and lives in Washington, D.C.

Interesting Book for Javascript Visualization Beginners

RaphaelJS is a visualization framework written in Javascript. In my quest to do browser based visualizations, I decided to try this book which I got as part of the Oreilly Reader Review Program.

The key selling point for this framework is the fact even IE6 can use it. The lack of cross browser woes would be reason enough to stick with this framework.

This book assumes some prior experience in Javascript. The author gives a brief introduction to Raphael and dives straight in.

What I like about the way Chris Wilson (the author) structures this book the way he slowly builds you up to more advanced RaphaelJS usage. He starts with the basics and always wraps up the chapter with a 'Case Study' where whatever you learnt is put to use. His case studies are actually pretty fun, with the examples being more 'real-world'. They actually give you the idea that your imagination's the limit and encourage you to think beyond 'HTML & CSS' when it comes to in browser visualizations.

He also ends the book with discussions on best practices and creating Javascript applications with RaphaelJS.

I enjoyed this book, especially trying out the visualizations at the end of each chapter.

This isn't a bad introduction to RaphaelJS

This isn't a bad introduction to RaphaelJS; and quite frankly there just aren't many books on this framework so it's not like there are any better options. The shame though is that there are so many mistakes in the code. If you know your JavaScript already you should be able to debug the examples and get things working, but if you are new to JavaScript then you should take a pass on this one as there are far too many code mistakes.
