Good range of level

I've used these probes in my 9th grade Earth Science class and love them. There are many that lean more towards elementary level and some that would be too basic for my students, but others that are perfect for my students. With my students I still get questions about what happens to the stars during the day, what shooting stars really are, how the Earth, Moon, and Sun move, whether the Sun is a star... These may seem like basic questions, but there are students out there who don't really know. My point is, don't just disregard this book because some of the questions seem basic, there are students who get held up by some topics that seem simple. (And there are also more difficult probes dealing with topics such as what Universe Expansion really means, so not everything is basic.)

These probes are very elementary in nature. Also mostly dealing with our own solar system and not much outside of it or regarding stars as a whole. This would be great for an elementary school science classroom. I've used the other books in this series with great success in my 9th grade classes so I was disappointed not be able to use anything out of this.

I have been teaching science for 21 years and took over the upper level astronomy program at the High School. Thought this book would help, but a BIG disappointment. It is troubling that there is no good book to help with High School astronomy and physics. Try something else if you need Astronmy ideas.

Great Introduction to Anthropology for the Uninterested (+ CAUTION TO THOSE NEEDING THE MOST CURRENT VERSION)

I had to use this book for my required introduction to anthropology class. As a computer science major, I was slightly interested at best. For someone who isn't all that great at learning about subjects like anthropology, this book was great. It was an easy read while being very informative. The charts in the book, while minimal were good small summaries of important information.

A caution to those that need the fifth version of the book:
While the fourth edition is nearly identical to the fifth edition, there is ONE WHOLE CHAPTER MISSING IN THIS VERSION, a chapter on science on health. Because of this, some of the chapters are also numbered differently between the versions. Keep this in mind if you decide to get this version instead of a newer one.

Doesn't Mess Around

I love textbooks that pack a lot of information into a short amount of pages, especially when they're cheap. I like a book that doesn't waste my time, especially since I've got multiple textbooks to read in a semester. This was a good one, and I felt by the end of it that I'd learned quite a bit. With that in mind, this is an exceptionally clear, useful, and well-considered book about cultural anthropology. The authors have done an outstanding job of making complex theories and ideas accessible in a short amount of space.

Again, everytime I pick up an Ed Friedland bass book, it's a world of wealth in the first few sentences. No fancy words, clear and understandable yet interesting in his instruction, has brought me forward in just a few weeks.

Good exercises

These are great fingering exercises. They are set up for the beginner to intermediate player. I like that the tab is right under the musical score. That way I get used to reading the score and using the tab if need be.
I only gave the book 4 stars because it is a bit repetitious.
I am not sure how often I will need an F# Pentatonic scale. But when I do, I know how to play it.

About the Author
Gloria Konig Fiero was born and raised in New York City. She earned her Masters degree in Art History at the University of California, Berkeley, and her Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Humanities at the Florida State University. She has taught Humanities, World History, and Art History for more than twenty-five years. She has written and lectured extensively on medieval and renaissance topics and on the arts of both East and West as they reflect the human condition. She currently divides her time between New Orleans, Louisiana, and New York City.

Pretty good, for a textbook

I rented this book for my Humanities 201 class, and I thought that it was gonna be the exact same as most other textbooks: boringly written in boring style with boringly boring boredom printed everywhere. This one isn't like that! It's hard to make a textbook on history interesting but the author of this book sure gave it a shot and it turned out pretty well. Instead of just listing events it talks more about how cultures and civilizations influenced each other across the globe and through the years. It is much easier to learn about humanity when you're focussing on the bigger picture, not looking at the little pieces with scrutiny. There are excerpts from historical texts to add a sense of authenticity to the lessons, and the online resources are actually very helpful as well.

I know that if you're getting this for a college class you probably don't have a choice on what book to buy, but if you're assigned this one then it won't be bad at all!

Pure Enchantment

As easily as Alice falls down the rabbit hole, Laura Heyenga's compilation pulls us into the magical land of paper cutting. Page by page we encounter amusements, contemplations, and oddities that reveal the depth flat paper can convey in the hands of 26 paper artists of diverse talent. Natile Avelia's introduction briefly covers history and provides important, well-written narrative snippets on each artist. To readers' delight, Rob Ryan was chosen to preface the book.

So why four stars?

My list of criticisms, preferences & observations:

Every photo is of a finished piece. I crave process shots beyond the two small photos of two separate pieces in the introduction.

The materials list for each piece is pitiful. Some examples: paper and acrylic paint; paper and emulsion; black paper. Uhm, what kind of paper? What weight? What type of acrylic?

Few pieces show scale. No measurements are provided. Some have reference in relationship to walls and books. The very last page with Hina Aoyama's delicate cutting held in a palm accentuates the importance of scale to the viewer.

I would have liked specific history on a few pieces: the amount of time a selected work took, how it was born, the difficulty. Fortunately at the beginning of each gallery we are provided a paragraph of insight into the artist's overall motivations.

Each artist's work covers 4-8 pages. On many pages a photo fills just 55% of the page with small type at the bottom of the page. (The type gives the title, year and/or material used.) Those small photos obscure the art. A larger easier-to-read font should have been used. I'd have paid more for a better layout.

Nearly all the featured artists are art/design graduates. I think Nikki McClure was the only autodidact. I'd have enjoyed seeing more self-taught artists. (Nikki's bio in the book delights.) But, this does not diminish the featured artists, each deserves their place in this creme de la creme book.

The majority of pieces are ethnic neutral. No papel picado, wycinanki, kirie, etc. That's an observation, not a gripe.

Much of the artists' work is available for viewing on the web. (But really, how handy is that?)

Biases and shortcomings aside, the book contains variety, surprise, skill and joy. Life tumbles from one page to the next. Paper Cutting lays an engaging visual feast at our fingertips and is worth the groceries forfeited to buy it.

This would be nice for those interested in the artist's histories, but I was looking for patterns and directions. I wouldn't recommend it to those just looking for patterns and directions.

Great ideas!

I am generally not a book buyer. I'm more of a library-goer, and I am rarely so tempted to purchase any book, but this one was worth it. My artsy/craftsy side has been dormant for quite awhile, but looking through this book has got me stirred up! I can't wait to get going on some projects :)

About the Author

Thornton Wilder (1897-1975) was an accomplished novelist and playwright whose works, exploring the connection between the commonplace and cosmic dimensions of human experience, continue to be read and produced around the world. His Bridge of San Luis Rey, one of seven novels, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1928, as did two of his four full-length dramas, Our Town (1938) and The Skin of Our Teeth (1943). Wilder's The Matchmaker was adapted as the musical Hello, Dolly!. He also enjoyed enormous success with many other forms of the written and spoken word, among them teaching, acting, the opera, and films. (His screenplay for Hitchcock's Shadow of Doubt [1943] remains a classic psycho-thriller to this day.) Wilder's many honors include the Gold Medal for Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the National Book Committee's Medal for Literature.

Great Drama!!

I really liked Thornton Wilder's "The Ides of March" because of it's drama and it's philosophical content. The first thing to note is the great structure of the book which makes it very dramatic. The book is structured into four separate parts and each parts leads up to a scene that is anticipated throughout the part. For part I, it is the dinner at Clodia and Clodius Pulcher's; for part II, it is the reception at Cleopatra's; for part III, it is the profanation of the mysteries of the goddess by clodia pulcher and her brother; and for part IV, it is Caesar's assasination. From the very start of each part, Wilder whets your appetite for how the climactic event is going to go and I was so anxious to find out what happened, which kept me turning the pages. The second thing I want to mention is the great amount of thought provoking philosophical content in this concise, 246 page novel. There is alot of reflection in Caesar's journal about the rational grounds for religion (a belief in God or the Gods), there is a passage on living one's life with the knowledge that one will die one day, and stuff about love and relationships. Also, there is alot of character analysis, analyzing Caesar's character, contrasting it to Cicero's and Junius Brutus's and others. The fact that Caesar and these others are these famous historical figures from ancient rome tinges it all with that feeling that one is gaining an education about the roots of Western Civilization, in touch with the classics. My favorite parts are probably the letters of Caesar to his friend Lucius Mamillius Turrinus because of the great philosophical content and also the letters at the end of each section where some other character will describe in a long letter what happened at the climactic event. I heartily recommend this book because of the great drama and philosophical content. I've read other books set in the ancient past, such as Mary Renault's "The Last of the Wine", set in ancient Greece during the Peloponessian War, but I like this one better because there is more drama, more excitement, as well as more philosophical content, more real wisdom about life. And it does all this in 246 pages compared to around 430 for Renault's book. Any fans of this book who have recommendations for me please e-mail me! Greg Feirman

Fascinating novel about Caesar

This excellent novel, Wilder's masterpiece, is set during the last 17 years in the life of Julius Caesar in Rome. In it he attempts to answer the following: "What sort of person was Caesar and why was he assassinated?" Told mainly through letters and documents of people who knew him, from the famous - Cleopatra, Catallus, Cicero, Brutus - to the lesser known - Cytheris, an actress; Turrinus, a friend; Cornelius Nepos, a political observer - and including such sources as Caesar's commonplace book and journal, broadsides, and various official memoranda, Wilder creates a brilliant picture of the man and the people who surround him. We learn of Caesar's great love for Rome, but his disdain for those who populate her. In a magnificent observation by his physician Sosthenes, he says, "Caesar does not love, nor does he inspire love. He diffuses an equable glow of ordered good will, a passionless energy that creates without fever, and which expands itself without self-examination or self-doubt....I could not love him and I never leave his presence without relief." Those few sentences speak volumes. We see in Caesar's own (private) letters how different the public figure (lofty, dictatorial, the great warrior) is from the private man (amused by human folly, lonely, sensitive to those who have been injured by life's cruelties). Yet the book is not just a history lesson, despite its appearance, but a moving novel that builds masterfully to a stunning climax on the Ides of March with his murder. The book is truly magnificent, filled with much insight into human motivation and observation. Definitely worth looking into.

Gripping treatment of the last year of Julius Caeser's life.

This is the perfect book for adolscents whom you want to interest in history. Told in the form of letters from some of Rome's most famous citizens, including Mark Antony, Cleopatra, Julius Caeser himself and Catullus, the poet, the book is divided into four parts, each of which starts earlier and ends later than the previous section. The letter format not only allows the characters to ruminate on the meaning of their lives--and some big issues as well, such as religion and destiny--but it also allows Wilder to show an event from multiple perspectives, a technique he uses well to deepen the complexity of events over the course of the book. Caeser may be the worst writer in the book. He is given to repeating phrases for lyrical effect in a way that can be a little cloying, but on the whole he is viewed a little admiringly to be fashionable in our revisionist times. Wilder's women are strong as usual, and the story is always gripping. It's amazing to me that this book is out of print.

My physical therapist recommended this book to me

I am not a physician, nurse, or physical therapist: I'm a photographer who awoke one morning several months ago to a sudden, severe, and debilitating case of vertigo. It subsided within 48 hours but left me with both impaired vision, balance, and coordination. In my search for answers, I was able to correctly diagnose what caused my vertigo (the hospital physicians as well as my regular physician had misdiagnosed my condition) and found a physical therapy clinic specializing in balance rehabilitation. My physical therapist recommended this book to me; even though it is a medical textbook, I found it wonderfully informative. The extensive rehabilitative exercises in this book both reinforced and supplemented those from my physical therapist; while it took a bit of study to understand some of the background technical information it was well worth the effort. This is an invaluable resource for anyone wanting to understand and learn more about the many conditions that can cause vertigo, as well as covering different diagnostic techniques and rehabilitative exercises. I am happy to report that I have now fully recovered from any impairment from my case of "vestibular neuritis", and am much better prepared to address any other incidence of vertigo that may occur for both myself and my family. Highly recommended.

This is the "bible" of vestibular dysfunction and treatment. As a PT who works with patients with vestibular dysfunction I have found this book invaluable. A must have for any PT working with patients with vestibular disorders.
