Disappointing. Not for Interview Preperation.

I got this book as I am a websphere enthusiast and want to look forward to gain more knowledge about the questions that are normally asked in the Job interviews. I was disappointed to see that the material in this book is not sufficient and these are not the questions that will be normally asked during the Job interviews for Websphere Application server admin interviews.

This book still have questions for WAS v5 which is long gone. Overall I did not liked this book.

I was looking for a recap/prep for some interviewing and this disappointed big time. As advertised, there are questions, but having a very extensive background in Websphere, I don't think these are the questions an informed interviewer is going to ask.

A classic, fun story for kids

This is classic for little kids because they really love the way the story comes full circle. Our children are around 30 years old and still remember how much they enjoyed this at an early age. We have given this book to parents with young kids many times and it is always a welcome addition to their libraries.

Some reviewers have complained that this book sends a negative message about welfare, people expecting from society, etc.. I think these people have to lighten up - it is simply a funny story aimed at young children.

Meh description of product at best

I was very excited for this little book. It was nice to receive two board books - it would be even nicer if the description listed the two books that were included and not just "if you give a mouse a cookie". Also, my package did not come with a doll, so the description needs to be updated that the doll is not included with this "library" of two books. Overall, 3 stars.

cons: doesn't list the other book included AND doesn't include the doll

My child's favorite book!

Laura Joffe Numeroff is an excellent children's author! My daughter and I have read this book so many times, she can recite word for word throughout the story. The cassette tape that comes along with the story book is excellent, because after the story is read, there is a fill-in-the-blanks game. Your child fills in the blank. (example - "If you give a mouse a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of _____.) The answer is milk. And this continues throughout the story. I highly recommend this book. No child's library should be without it!

It was okay

Where do I start with this review? I am a fan of forbidden love books so I didn't hesitate on getting the chance to read this one. Logan and Sophie meet each other for the first time on their parents wedding day. In the beginning Sophie is 16 and Logan is 18, so not like a full on brother sister relationship. Although they don't know they are step-siblings until later in the evening. Sparks fly and there is an immediate attraction between them.

In the beginning they both fight their feelings for each other but Logan wants to give it a shot and see how things go between them. Tragedy strikes and Sophie refuses to give into her feelings thinking that everyone around her would be disgusted.

While the premise for the story was good and it was written well I found myself becoming bored. The push and pull went on forever and the ending felt rushed, if that makes sense. I kept reading to get to the end and when I reached that I point I felt a little let down.

A brilliant start to the brilliant taboo series - five star read as ever from Mandy Lou Dowson

So we meet Sophie, the never been kissed, sixteen year old on her mother's wedding day. Sophie had no siblings till that day. The mother-daughter relationship is clear to see and the bond they have is perfect. She was truly happy for mum as the perfect bride to be on her wedding day, with her daughter as bridesmaid. It was that day that would change the rest of Sophie's life forever. Meeting the handsome stranger, with no formal introduction, it felt exciting and new and as I can only explain it, inexorably mean to be. I could almost feel the static in the air reading about them, forgetting they were in fact teenagers.
The inevitable happens when the two are introduced and it dawns on them that the attraction they felt should just be squashed, they were siblings now...well it's easier in theory. How could they create a sibling bond?

A separation for a year another birthday would bring awful news, and rather than facing their attraction again, the pair cling onto one another through the worst news. We see them fall apart.

We meet the couple a number of years later, when Sophie is settled with her then partner and Logan is, well, Logan :)
But he continues to be the support he claimed he would be, he speaks to her frequently about her issues or bad dreams and frequent late night phone calls continue. He pulls Sophie from the darkest hours she has and reminds her of the good. He is the perfect, sometimes hilarious gentleman.

However when Sophie finds herself single, the first person she runs to is Logan. They reconnect not only emotionally but physically and it leaves Sophie feeling confused once again doubtful of others judgments and her feelings, rather than grasping onto some kind of happiness. She runs and this time Logan's hurt and resentment is clear to see. He reaches out but gets nothing.

When the pair meet back up under a business contract they seem like different people. But the attraction is no less. However Logan's hurt is evident and makes him become a character difficult to like. Would he push Sophie too far? Would she be able to refuse the biggest contract her small business have ever been offered? Would he make her jump through hoops to fulfill the contract?

The book was amazing. So completely different from the 'Moon Bound Series' but brilliant none the less. The characters were brilliant and although it was a hard read at points, it was a constant page turner and so emotional. All I desperately wanted was for them both to find their own happiness.

Even someone close to Sophie can realise her feelings for Logan and I hoped maybe that would be the permission she needed to grant herself some happiness.

A five star read and the same for my steam meter ;)

So, you know when you are really excited about something and go to tell a friend, but your story winds up being something like "This happened, and then this, and then this, and this!"? That is how this story is written.

From the second Sophie meets her step-brother, Logan, she is highly attracted to him, but she doesn't know who he is yet. When she finds out who he is, she immediately feels dirty for having those thoughts about her step-brother. I kind of wanted to slap her for being so dumb... you aren't actually related. This whole "oh I can't! what would society think?" is a big issue in this book for no reason.

The story takes places over a ten year span and ends pretty abruptly.

Excellent Book

This book is really great! The complex things in turbulence are explained in that way I've never seen it before. There are a lot of great figures that are explaining a lot of things - for example, vorticity dynamics is followed with great pictures. Main topic of this book is physical aspect of turbulence, and that's great.

If you're dealing (better to say coping) with turbulence in some way, you should have this book - specially if you're a novice in this area.

A good book for graduate students

This text is well-written and presents a lot of advanced material in relatively short order. However, the mathematics involved are quite advanced and the book is certainly intended only for people with some background in fluids - it is far from an "introductory" text!

TURBULENCE

I would regard this book as one of the "bibles" of Turbulence.

There is the paradox that the sheer comprehensiveness of this work reminds us all that there is, as yet, still no overall Theory of Turbulence.

As Davidson says in the Preface:-

"Turbulence holds a unique place in the field of classical mechanics. Despite the fact that the governing equations have been known since 1845, there is still surprisingly little we can predict with relative certainty. The situation is reminiscent of the state of electromagnetism before it was transformed by Faraday and Maxwell."

Fascinating Book in Many Ways

This book will be great for people interested in many topics, from English jurisprudence, the insanity defense, cunning-folk, early methodism, to the nascent fear inducing media, it has a lot to recommend it. One of Mr. Davies better books.

True Picture of the Cunning Folk

One thing I like about writers like Owen Davies is that they give you the whole truth and nothing but the truth. A true story documented during Mid -Victorian times in Leeds, England involving a murder case. Nothing unusual bout a murder case except this one involved religion and the presence of a wizard or a cunning man.

William Dove was the son of a well to do Methodist currier named Christopher Dove. The family was quit well known in the community and they had solid reputation to bank on. William was sort of a black sheep of the family. Showing signs of erratic behavior at an early age, he would torture animals and kill them in extremely painful acts of torture. He was would inflict sadistic pain on other people. His father had tried to help young William in a variety of ways but William performed poorly in school and he never listened to the teacher he was apprenticed under. When people spoke with him they swore they were speaking with a dim wit. As a last ditch measure his father rented him a farm in hope of finding some salvation for his wayward son.

William did a horrible running the farm and he made a series of crazy and erratic decisions. The farm did not make money . During his time for running the farm William met Harriet and married her. Despite William being unstable the family felt it was a good match to be united with the Dove family. Harriet was prone to fits of hysteria especially after her brother died. Her years with William were not easy. Often times he was cruel to her , he had a drinking problem and he did not maintain stable employment. Since the farm was not making money the owner of the farm decided he would not renew the leas with William Dove.

It was at this point in life that William fell in with cunning man or bitterly known as a wizard. Back in those days Wizards would call themselves doctors or dentist as back then any fool could do so as there was no regulation. Many people would subscribe to cunning folk owing to desperate life situation. Many of the better educated felt that Cunning -Folk were deceiving and dishonest people who took advantage of people. Some phrenologist even stted that the part of the brain responsible for honesty and noble behavior was smaller in cunning folk then it was in normal people. They were master deceivers. Henry Harrison convinced William tht his magic would save the farm, predict his fathers death and also revealed that Harriet his first wife would die and he would later remarry and be happy.

The first predication did not come true. The second one did The third ..... William used strychnine to poison his wife. He believed he could get away with it. He did not. Prior to being hung he confessed his guilty and tried to spin some o the guilt on Henry Harrison. William Dove was tried I a time of transition for Great. Britain. Debate swirled over insanity pleas, the effect of religion and the humaneness of using the death penalty. Henry Harrison would later get his come uppance after being accused of rape . He was sentenced to prison but not death. After that he faded into history.

For those wanting to study witchcraft or magic it would be well to note that many of these magicians were not Wiccan with the reed "Harm Ye None' In fact they took advantage of vulnerable ad desperate people. These guys were shady con man and they did not worship the lord and lady nor did they work with the old gods. In fact several called on new testament figure including the devil himself.

Awesome!

The score was in perfect condition, VERY clear and easy to read. beautiful neat print. I got it very quickly after i ordered it. If you are doing a production of Gilbert & Sullivan's The Gondoliers, this is a GREAT score to use !

No text (title, etc.) on spine!

I'm not sure if mine was a misprint or what, but it didn't have any text on the spine (e.g. the title, etc.), thereby causing potential confusion when I put it in my bookshelf.

Other than that, this score is perfectly fine - exactly as I remembered a previous copy I had used when I did this show several years ago. However, the lack of title and composers on the spine is kind of a big oversight.

I was not sure if this score was simply piano vocal, with no dialogue so I bought the libretto as well as the score. But to my happy surprise the dialogue to the operetta is included.

About the Author
Zakhar Prilepin was born near Ryazan in 1975. Prilepin had a varied life before dedicating himself to writing, spending time as a student, as a labourer, as a journalist and as a soldier, serving with the Special Forces in Chechnya. More recently Prilepin has come to the public attention not only as one of the best writers of his generation, but as a committed, and often controversial, political activist on behalf of the 'Other Russia' coalition. Prilepin lives in Nizhny Novgorod where he is the regional editor of independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta. His website is one of the most popular author's sites in Russia. Prilepin's combination of lucid prose and social consciousness has made him one of the most popular and acclaimed writers in Russia today and drawn comparisons with the Russian classics. His novel Sankya, which draws on his own experiences to depict life among young political extremists, was shortlisted for the Russian Booker in 2007, when it also won the Yasnaya Polyana Award and the Best Foreign Novel of the Year Award in China. Prilepin's works have been translated into numerous foreign languages; regrettably, English-speaking readers have as yet had to content themselves with a handful of short stories. Brilliant and distinctive voice

A bestseller in Russia and now translated into English and published by the UK/Dutch publisher Glagoslav, this novel-in-stories about the life of a young man named Zakharka(not told chronologically but in glimpses of various times) is a quite extraordinary book, sensual, tender, funny, brutal and philosophical by turns. This is a very male voice yet though some have compared him to Hemingway, I don't think that gives any real sense of the flavor of this book, it's not macho or emotion-repressed at all, quite the opposite. This is also very much a modern novel, both in its narrative format and the portrait of the society it draws, yet to my mind it's also very much in the headlong, sensual, experimental and surprising tradition of Russian literature. Life-affirming yet not optimistic, joyous yet very much aware of pain and sin, it's the story of a young man living in a society traumatised by the crashing of a system and the subsequent confusions of the new order, who snatches moments of true happiness which are not in any sense negated by the harder aspects of things.
I particularly loved three of these stories, all dealing with love in its different forms--a teenage love affair, a summer full of unresolved tension between three cousins and a particularly poignant and beautiful evocation of family life and the precious distinctiveness of children. But there are also stories of soldiers in Chechnya and nightclub bouncers and drunks, which though much harsher still manage to convey emotion in a way which rings absolutely true. Prilepin has a sharp eye for nature too and a gift for unexpected yet precise imagery. Brilliant work, not to be missed.

Excellent story!

SIN is one of the first novels by modern Russian authors I've read. What a pleasant surprise! Coming from a linguistic background, I could appreciate the translation and felt absolutely no cultural barriers while reading this book. The language flows naturally, and I could feel the waves of emotion that were going through the author when he composed this amazing story. In fact, this book felt quite a revelation - we don't get to see too many truly empowered men in literature these days, those authors who are not afraid of exposing their vulnerability. Zakhar Prilepin shared a story of a young boy's journey towards becoming a man. Certain experiences were needed to turn an immature soul into a person of integrity, a man of his word. And how refreshing and moving was to read about the bonding between a father and a son, and a man's inner monologue of love towards his family and life itself. It's a worthy read that I recommend to everyone.

A stunning yet complex example of the best in Russian writing

After reading Zakhar Prilepin's newest work translated into English, Sin, it came as no surprise to learn that the book won several prizes in its original Russian. It's difficult to do the book justice in a short review; the most important thing to say is that Prilepin's exploration of the human soul is in the tradition of many of the classic Russian writers.

The main reason I myself found the book so definitive is that it is essentially an exploration of the pain of human existence (perhaps a stereotype of Russian literature), but also of the joy, pleasure and love of it. The bliss provoked in the characters by life's simple pleasures - a bite of sausage after a slug of vodka, feeding pancakes to stray puppies, a baby son's breath as he sleeps - lend the book an intense, but never cloying, sweetness. Prilepin particularly enjoys exploring how kindness to those weaker than ourselves can be edifying.

However, Prilepin's exploration of the darker sides of the human experience is part and parcel of the book's authenticity. Animals - from chickens, to dogs, to rats - are often used as a prompt to the reader to consider their own morality and mortality. Examples of violence, from the slaughtering of a pig for food to the unnecessary abuse of a helpless kitten, highlight the more bestial elements of human nature, but also the power we have over other beings - whether we choose to use it or not.

In a sense the book portrays violence as something ordinary, part of everyday life, whether you're working as a nightclub , in a supermarket, or in the middle of a warzone. However, it is never the whole story: in a story focusing on the Chechen, in the midst of a harsh environment, the characters find it difficult to forget their status as sons, as fathers and as lovers - parts of their identity that clash with the cold brutality demanded from them as soldiers.

Sin is not only a very well written book, skilfully translated, but an enjoyable one that adroitly moves between different moods and settings. It is a fairly short novel, but doubtless one of the best to come out of Russia in the past decade.

Great book!

My wife is using this book to help her get ready for college. She is a native Spanish-speaker and can talk just fine in English. This book answers many of the English grammar questions that we native speakers just can't seem to answer. She has tried several books and this is by far the one she enjoys using. A great resource, highly recommended!

Pretty good

I picked this one because it seemed to offer what other ESL books I have used in teaching did. It is adequate, but not really as good. It's progression is awkward to me. There are a lot of good things about it, the lessons are adequate for their purpose, but the way it advances leaves me wishing it was building more on the past lesson rather than feeling we were starting out on a completely new tack.
