Think about it, before you spend your money on it

Since seeing this on Amazon months before it's release, I had anticipated buying this book more than anything. At the time, it was my dream book. I had read reviews and remained sort of blinded by the book instead of taking into thought what some people said. In some reviews that I read, many described it to be more less of a handbook (which provides step by step instructions or guidance) to more of magazine feel type of book. Regardless, it's a beautiful book by all means. Beautiful advice, pictures, and illustrations, however, it is merely just that. Its a nice train ride or bus read. Something you pick up at Barnes and Noble and browse through while you sit there then place back down before you leave. Not to bash the book in no means because as previously stated, it is well done. However, If you seek genuine guidance to the fashion world, you will not find it in this book. It is great for inspiration and a broad view into what you may get yourself into if your considering entering fashion such as myself but rather, stick to the internet. The internet is your friend especially with something so media involved such as fashion. This book is filled with people in the careers you may be looking into and short biographies of today's most famous designers, some models, and very very few pages of actual advice. If your in the less serious stages of considering a career in fashion, buy this book. If you're far more into it and serious, you should be looking into the schools you want to attend, not this book.

A fun read but not in depth enough to help you get your feet off the ground

This book is a fun read for a long plane flight or a long road trip. But almost all of the suggestions are just a brush on the surface. Read it to get an idea or to get you excited about a career choice, but it doesn't give you much to work with to get you in the right direction. The examples stories and interviews in the book are fun to read. And the pictures are very eye candy (just like Teen Vogue Magazine). For example one of the designers in the book said that you should try to get an internship to get a good idea of the fashion business....well, duhhh...everyone knows that. Plus, he doesn't tell you how to find the internship, how to get an interview for the internship, what you should do on the interview (how to answer the interview questions, what to wear, what designers are looking for in an intern, etc... so there are a lot of unanswered questions that the book left out. After reading this book, I felt that I was still lost and I had to dig into other sources (very hard to find) to uncover more tips and secrets of the trade.

This book is still a fun read. And for a teen or young adult is a great book to own. The background information that they give you on the established designers are good to know. It gives one hope knowing that most of these designers started out doing something else and majored in something else in college. It just tells you that passion drives everything.
So this is still a great book to own. And if you are thinking about a career in fashion, an extremely cut throat and competitive industry, you need to read everything that you can get your hands on. Lots of great pictures to look at. Very eye candy.

My only complaint on this book is that they should not label this book as a "handbook" because it is more of a light guide/background. This book only makes you crave for more information. And it leaves a lot left to be desired for.
A handbook should be able to guide you in the right direction, which this book does not do. I just wished that this book had more of the important and deeper information that will get you the job that you want in the fashion business/industry.

I purchased this book for a fashion course I never completed:P But this book is honestly geared towards teenagers...I know, I know it says "teen vogue handbook" but the course I was taking was a college course. I was hoping it would also be relevant for college students. I didn't finish reading the book because of the teen audience tone. So, if you're a teen, this book is for you! If you're already in college, I don't recommend it.

A "must -have " if you work with adopted or permanently placed children!

Core Attachment Therapy By Dorothy Derapelian M.Ed., LCMHC (Review)
I am so excited about this book and Ms. Derapelian's amazing work. I have been following her work for about a year, after attending a brief introductory workshop on Core Attachment Therapy. I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California, specializing in work with children with trauma histories. I am also an advanced trainer of the Nurtured Heart Approach. This pivotal book to me represents the "missing link" for so many of us helping families who's adopted children have been impacted by many traumas, including attachment disruptions. This book is very accessible, respectful, and straight forward. There is no blame, only hope - and more importantly specific methods to foster bonding and attachment in developmental sequence. It addresses the foundations and development of this approach, a simple understanding of the neurobiology underlying trauma and attachment, the phases of attachment, a brief introduction to The Nurtured Heart Approach, and then outlines with vivid descriptions the "Mommy/Daddy" games used in parent-child therapy to stimulate and simulate the attachment process. Therapists (and parents) will see and understand where in the child's development the attachment had been disrupted, and be overjoyed to experience the "repair" taking place. Ms. Derapelian also includes a parent assessment interview, attachment symptom list, a parent journal and a follow up questionnaire, which helps therapists and parents to document successes and improvements (lessening of challenging symptoms). I am so very grateful for this monumental book and work, and look forward to this approach becoming accessible to therapists and parents alike. Love the creativity & knowledge!

I am so thrilled to see this work. In the realm of working with children and youth with attachment challenges, we need all the creativity we can get. Dorothy Derapelian not only weaves in her clear-cut knowledge on the topic, but shares her personal experience in adopting her own daughter which gives her unique insight into facilitating these playful activities. I have personally tested some of the activities myself and have found them very helpful in guiding the parent and child to recreate a bond and move toward healing.

A beautiful coffee-table book with text, it displays and briefly explains the outward meaning of the symbols of the Craft. Translated from French, it gives a view of the universality of Freemasonry and at the same time, its variety. Inasmuch as it reflects both the diversity of the Craft and its universality, it is a reminder of what our Founding Fathers meant when they coined the motto E pluribus unum for The Great Seal of the United State.

This is a good book for Freemasons in the English-speaking world inasmuch as for intelligent and attentive members of the Craft, it suggests the subtle differences that exist between the French and the Americans.

Beautifully illustrated, this book is extremely well done.

I would recommend this book to anyone belonging to or interested in the Masonic fraternity. It becomes more interesting in that it is a translation of work originally written by a French Mason and therefore portions are unfamiliar to those of us familiar with Freemasonry in the U.S. Again the illustrations are splendid and would be worthy without the text. The thoughtful description of the Fraternity only adds to the value of this most intersting explanation of Masonic allegory and symbology.

This book is updated!!

I received this book on Friday and have not had a chance for my students to look through it. However, I was thrilled to see that it is indeed updated for the new test format. Most of the study books are not. This book is written by an experienced AP Chem teacher, with many tips for students throughout the sections. This is one book that I will recommend to my students.

So far, so good! It's the only book I've reviewed for my students that actually aligns with the new curriculum, labs included. So many mainstream books advertised that they were updated for the new curriculum, yet included the old list of labs and reduced practice multiple choice to four answers. Not much of an update if you ask me! This book is legit. Bare bones review of the essentials. If you focus on what Adrian has presented here, you should be in great shape! Helped me as a teacher to sift through the new curriculum as well!

the most fascinating book i've ever read

I never expected Princess Daisy to be as good of a read as it was. They story is captivating and the herione, Daisy makes you want to be her. Krantz's descriptions of the places in the novel are so wonderful that you feel as though you were right there. All the different characters in this book seem to all have a little secret and it just makes you want to read more and more to uncover it. If you have never read a romance novel before, I would recommend that you read this novel. This is probably my favorite book because of the unique way Krantz presents the story along with her detailed descriptions of everyone and everything in the book. I enjoyed this book so much that i went and bought the miniseries.

Excellent author, excellent story, excellent read!

I admit it, i 'judge a book by it's cover'. That is the reason i first picked up "Princess Daisy", the cover was beautiful. The story turned out to be equally compelling. The key to a good book is making you feel like you are in the story, and making the characters and their situations seem real. Krantz does this wonderfully. I was captured by the story of Daisy, her life, her struggles, and her triumphs. When i reached the last chapter, i was extremely disappointed. I didn't want the story to end! I read this last chapter over and over, and i hoped for a sequel. I highly recommend reading this novel to anyone who enjoys reading about romance, adventure, and mystery; this book has it all, and pulls it off well.

Would have been twice as good were it half as long.

This book was a diverting "guilty" pleasure to read. (I never liked that expression because I never feel guilty about reading trashy novels.) However, it really didn't need to be as long as it was. The thing that added all the unnecessary length was Krantz's insistence on giving us pages of background information on characters who are completely tangential to the plot. We get all kinds of introductions to and sex scenes between characters who simply do not matter. The book is supposed to be about Princess Daisy, based on the title, but her story only takes up 2/3 of it.

I like Krantz's writing style, because it's wildly over the top and often makes me laugh. However, she does have a tendency to just run on and on about things once she's already made her point. In the interest of NOT following in her footsteps, I will end this review.

In 1984, Thomas Cole discovered Eldrewey Stearns in a Galveston psychiatric hospital. Stearns, a fifty-two-year-old black man, complained that although he felt very important, no one understood him.

Over the course of the next decade, Cole and Stearns, in a tumultuous and often painful collaboration, recovered Stearns' life before his slide into madness—as a young boy in Galveston and San Augustine and as a civil rights leader and lawyer who sparked Houston's desegregation movement between 1959 and 1963.

While other southern cities rocked with violence, Houston integrated its public accommodations peacefully. In these pages appear figures such as Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther King, Jr., Leon Jaworski, and Dan Rather, all of whom—along with Stearns—maneuvered and conspired to integrate the city quickly and calmly.

Weaving the tragic story of a charismatic and deeply troubled leader into the record of a major historic event, Cole also explores his emotionally charged collaboration with Stearns. Their poignant relationship sheds powerful and healing light on contemporary race relations in America, and especially on issues of power, authority, and mental illness.

Thomas R. Cole is Professor at the Institute for the Medical Humanities at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. His book The Journey of Life: A Cultural History of Aging in America was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

More than just History

In a sense this is two books. While it starts with a discussion of how the author, a medical ethicist, was drawn to write this book about Eldrewey Stearns, the first 100 pages primarily tells the story of integration in Houston, Texas in the late 50s and 60s. It's a compelling and interesting story, but it is more compellingly told by the video that was made simultaneously with this book. That video, The Strange Demise of Jim Crow: How Houston Desegregated Its Public Accomodations, 1959-1963 is available from University of Texas Press (I can't find it on Amazon). The video includes interviews with many of the prominent actors in this drama and is always a favorite when I use it in my Introduction to US and Texas Politics class.
The second 100 pages of the book is about Eldrewey Stearns' life before and after the movement. Stearns was one of the leaders of the civil rights movement in Houston, but he is also someone who has struggled with mental illness all his life. This book provides a fascinating insight into the struggles the author goes through in trying to help Eldrewey and to understand this complex, flawed, yet sometimes heroic man. He also comes to considerable insight about himself through the process of trying to chronicle Eldrewey's story.
An excellent read, whether you are interested in the history of the movement or in getting an understanding of how it is to deal with mental illness.

Fascinating book about Houston, integration, and two men

In the 1990s I spent two years traveling in Europe. One day in a Hungarian history museum I hit the wall: Here I was reading all about the Magyars, but I knew little about my own hometown--Houston, Texas--except whatever I'd been forced to memorize eons ago in grade school. Unfortunately, once I got back to Texas I found many of the local history books unbearable: "In 1832, Lamar So-and-So reined in his trusty steed at the banks of Buffalo Bayou." I gave up my getting-to-know-Houston project until recently, when I stumbled upon No Color is My Kind: The Life of Eldrewey Stearns and the Integration of Houston. This is easily the best book I've ever read about Houston history. Thomas Cole personalizes the story, makes himself visible as a person confronting his own ideals, frustrations, and personal myths. His subject, Eldrewey Stearns, is obviously no easy man to pin down. Stearns has troubles, and I'm afraid he suffers more than most people. However, the fact that the writer refused--or was unable--to paint Stearns as a perfectly noble (and flat) hero is, in my opinion, exactly why Stearns is such a moving figure and why this work is so much richer than the Daughters of the American Revolution (or worse, Daughters of the Confederacy) tributes that so many other books about Houston and Houstonians seem to be. Stearns is real, and Cole's depiction of him and his part in Houston's integration movement deepened my appreciation for African-Americans' struggles and their courageous stands.

Great for Houstonians.

Great book, I could do without the commentary by the author and his story, but the focus on Stearns is really interesting. It is a good "must have" for anyone looking at Civil Rights in Houston; which tends to be a bit elusive.
