Superb book!

The immune system is a favorite topic of mine. Almost everything which happens to our bodies involves the immune system. So I was very interested in a book which is on a very professional level with current information and excellent writing style. Also I feel that educational graphics are especially important to drive home the information. This book passed all my criteria with flying colors. I really enjoyed studying it and have now read it twice (there's way too much information there to absorb on just one reading!). Almost every process in the human body involves the immune system and learning to minimize inflammation is a huge leg up on feeling good! Everything from sore muscles and joints, strep throat, healing, migraine, every disease known to man, sunburn, and on and on involve inflammation. Learning the mechanisms of inflammation and immunity and how to quiet inflammation and bolster immunity REALLY adds to ones health. I highly recommend this superb book as a way to learn how to baby ones body!

overall it's good

Overall this book is pretty good. But when i bought it, i didn't realize that it's loose leaf and it's a little bit dirty in those holes. But the biggest problem is some of the letters are lost because those holes are so close to the content. But it won't affect your reading.

Parham does not disappoint

This is a very good textbook. The publisher, Garland sciences, is one that I trust because they have always done a very good job with their science textbooks (check out Molecular Biology of the Cell, The Biology of Cancer, and others). Continuing along this trend, Peter Parham's book does not disappoint. The figures are cartoonish in most instances of course, much like the ones in MBOC and other Garland books, but they have to be that way and it does help very much with understanding; this is mixed appropriately with real histological cross sections and figures from the clinical setting to give a more realistic idea of what things look like. To a scientist who does/participates in research with a partial or minor immunological context, or needs to learn selected topics in immunology for future research, this text is the perfect companion. For a seasoned immunologist who does pure research in the field, a better choice would probably be the more detailed and in-depth Immunobiology by Janeway, from which Parham's text is adapted if I'm not mistaken.

In the summer when I go to bed/The sun still streaming overhead/My bed becomes so small and hot/With sheets and pillow in a knot,/And then I lie and try to see/The things Id really like to be. In each of the following verses, a boy imagines that he is a different animal, and that creature, as well as the narrators dog, appears gloriously realized in the accompanying full-page painting. The text is pleasant enough, but it is Begins inventive menagerie that lifts this book above the standard illustrated bedtime verse. As the boy muses about being a giraffe (Id do a tap dance in the street/with little bells upon my feet), the picture shows a smiling giraffe, clad in a striped waistcoat and a bow tie, tap dancing through a rainy city scene. It's a rhyming book about a boy that lies in bed thinking of the things he would like to be. I would recommend this book to a younger audience as it is easy reading and there are more pictures than words. A book on poetry with excellent color illustrations, and would recommend it for the 2nd graders.

This is the best bedtime book I've read to my children.

This book was very intertaining. It kept all of my children:10yrs, 5yrs, 2 1/2yrs and 1 1/2, interested thoughout the entire story. It is a fun book to read before bed. The illustrations are wonderful.

Concrete

This was a gift for a relative, who does a lot of DIY on his property. He told me that though he had expected more text, it was very interesting just to see what has been done using concrete. The book has houses, business buildings, museums, roads, apartment buildings, and Hoover Dam.

The photographs are excellent, and the text with each one is informative. Some of the structures were designed by well known architects, some lesser known. A few of the pages are not numbered when the photos take both pages. The index lists projects by name, with page numbers, and architects by name, with page numbers, which means you can search either way. Photographic credits are at the end of the index.

The book is 11.75" by 10.25". It is 237 pages without the index. The paper is heavy and glossy.

I had flipped through it before I gave it to him, and enjoyed it. I imagine that anyone using concrete would get ideas from the book. However, it is not a text book.

I recommend it.

A very interesting and detailed history for those with some training in linguistics

Peter Rickard's A HISTORY OF THE FRENCH LANGUAGE was first published in 1974 with a second edition appearing in 1989. Please note that although this Amazon listing describes the second edition, I read the first edition and my review is based on that.

Rickard was Drapers Professor of French at Cambridge and in this 174-page text he brings us from the earliest days when the speech of France was but a collection of vulgar Latin dialects to the modern standard language. Along the way, he shows how sound change spurred morphological change, how literary production down through time reflects the evolution of the language, and what polemics authorities engaged in on language standardization.

I should mention that this a not a book for those with some French who want to learn how to read earlier texts. The reader of A HISTORY OF FRENCH ideally has some training in Latin and in basic linguistics (phonology and morphology). I'd recommend reading W. Sidney Allen's Vox Latina before Rickard's history, in order to have a better understanding of the pronunciation of late Latin.

My only real complaint about Rickard's history is that discussion of diaspora French is missing. Once the various dialects of France have formed a standard language, his focus rests entirely on that standard language and its registers in France. African French, which I find quite fascinating, is in no way covered. Neither is Quebec French, which is simply inexplicable.

The reader of A HISTORY OF FRENCH ideally has some training in Latin and in basic linguistics (phonology and morphology). I'd recommend reading W. Sidney Allen's Vox Latina before Rickard's history, in order to have a better understanding of the pronunciation of late Latin.

My only real complaint about Rickard's history is that discussion of diaspora French is missing. Once the various dialects of France have formed a standard language, his focus rests entirely on that standard language and its registers in France. African French, which I find quite fascinating, is in no way covered. Neither is Quebec French, which is simply inexplicable.

Not the Best On the Topic

A social and linguistic history of the French language; inclusive if rather heavy going. Unfortunately, it is now getting rather dated -- first published 1974, revised in 1989. Francophones, of course, have a wide choice, but there are also some newer books out in English. I like Lodge's "French: from dialect to standard" better; it is more interesting and better written.

More predictions about the Millennials

This is another work by Strauss and Howe, similar in theme to their first book, Generations. The main thesis is that culture undergoes cycles of change composed of four generations each, alternating between inward-directed and outward-directed emphasis.

The book comes several years after Millennials Rising, and as such contains more detailed predictions about the Millennial generation, with specific application to popular culture and media.

The main idea is that within several years we will see a major cultural shift, as the Millennial generation becomes a dominant influence on the culture as a whole. This is a civic-minded generation like the G.I.s that won World War II; it will have a major impact on rebuilding public institutions.

Several concerns might be posed concerning the Strauss/Howe thesis. The claims regarding generational cycles are difficult to support quantitatively and rigorously--i.e., the theory may be unfalsifiable, thus not scientific. The theory minimizes other important trends, e.g. technological or civilizational. Much data provided in defense of the theory seem force-fitted and actually don't support the case: for example, it is said that Millennials love epic hero movies, such as Troy, Alexander and King Arthur--though none of these did outstandingly at the box office. Furthermore, many characteristics of youth culture are described here, but it is not clear that these facts actually support their theory or are incidental truisms about current youth culture.

This being said, this book as well as its predecessors make substantial claims about culture and explain much of cultural history difficult to explain otherwise. Anyone concerned about cultural trends cannot afford to neglect these works.
