About the Author
Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 – July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author, best known for his many formulaic juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. STREET URCHIN OVERCOMING ADVERSITY

Set on the callous streets of post Civil War New York this 130-page novelette introduces readers to a new genre by presenting a cocky street lad dubbed Ragged Dick. This new type protagonist, commonly referred to as "Our Hero," is one of a lose army of boot blacks, fending for themselves virtually friendless in a hostile city. Possessing street smarts beyond his years, as well as a generous nature, Dick proves instantly likeable--for his good looks (when not grime-covered) and his saucy repartee in saucy city dialogue. Despite being illiterate and homeless he ekes out a hand-to-mouth existence--allowing himself meager evening and culinary pleasures as his income permits. Dick also earns the respect and empathy of readers by his generous actions toward boys younger and more helpless than himself. Without adult guidance he has been cheerfully surviving on his own since he was seven.

Through encounters with various dignified and affluent gentlemen--mostly his customers--Dick receives unexpected kindness and valuable advice on how to improve his lowly station in life. Soon it becomes his goal to work hard, save up and get an education somehow--in order to make himself "respectable" some day. Christian ethics are expressed by several characters who exhort him to practice a moral and humane lifestyle.

As Dick has many adventures which point out the perils of city street life, this book may also have served as a cautionary tale for boys who were considering running away--assuming they could read. Alger implies that success can be achieve by dint of hard work, personal dedication, honesty and clean living (no gambling, music halls, drinking, smoking, stealing or lying.) Child's Book?

This is a realistic book about a young boy doing "good" and in turn he has many lucky breaks. It is supposed to be a child's book, but I don't know how many children would voluntarily read this. I read it for my Children's Literature class and I loved it! It deals with a less severe form of didactism, which is a nice change. It is a fast read also.

A simple story with some powerful morals

When reviewing a story I think the easiest way to determine how many stars to give is the clarity with which you found the key points of the book and how clearly they are in your mind. This is the reason why ‘The Ragged Dick’ gets 5 stars from me. You aren’t going to find a complex work of literature here. There is no subtle web of deceit and subterfuge. The story is there right in front of you and it’s easy to absorb. Once you are finished though you will be better for the experience. There is also a strong undercurrent of business and work ethic contained in the story too which I will also address.

A superficial view of this book would say that it’s a pretty typical ‘rags to riches story’. That’s a fair assessment but there’s a lot more to it. Firstly, because a story is simple doesn’t make it bad. I feel that many novels challenge themselves to be as complex as possible without adding a massive amount to the quality of the story. The author clearly recognises this because there is never any ambiguity. The tale moves at a constant clip and you get a clear mental picture of life in NYC at this time (though I assume for many it was a lot worse than portrayed in this book). A lack of grit surrounding the nature of society at the time comes I suspect from the constant optimism of the protagonist.

As mentioned, this book has quite a capitalist story to it. It talks repeatedly about the benefits of self-improvement, saving and moral decency. I think in particular that lessons about spending less than you earn are ones that are forgotten easily – you will be well reminded by the time you finish. You could argue that the story could be a pointer toward political lines that would be comparable to what we see today. Perhaps, but I don’t think this is the key message of the book. I don’t think it impossible though that this book could readily be pointed to as a means of illustrating the benefits of being a shrewd entrepreneur.
It’s unlikely to take you long to get through this book – especially if like me you are really taken in by the story. I don’t read a tremendous amount of fiction but I will have fond memories of this story. It also has put several financial fundamentals back into the front of my mind. This alone should make the book very cheap relative to the payoff.

With his newest volume, Ginsborg offers an excellent exegesis of the Berlusconi phenomenon. Ginsborg, who teaches history at the University of Florence, is also the author of analyses of postwar Italian history and society, A History of Contemporary Italy and Italy and Its Discontents. Here he does readers a service in pointing out that the Berlusconi phenomenon is not only unprecedented but also a mortal threat to democracy. Ginsborg's short book proceeds chronologically from Berlusconi's shadowy beginnings in the Milan construction business to his leap into television. As Ginsborg convincingly demonstrates, it was Berlusconi's revolutionary rethinking of the staid medium in the 1980s that laid the base for his political trajectory. Most brilliant is chapter five, "Berlusconi's Project," where Ginsborg lays bare the political and theoretical underpinnings of what some might call a more benign form of fascism. Berlusconi, from student to ego-maniac

The factual inderpinnings of the young man's key social contacts provided by this highly responsible author function to broaden one's concept of the universe of possible choices Berlusconi ignored as he persistently sought to gratify his abnormal need to dominate individuals and society.

Decent, but Biased

2013 Addendum: With all that has come out since I wrote this review, I realize that I was too forgiving when it came to Berlusconi. This book offers a good glimpse into the reasons why Berlusconi became what we now know him to be. I will leave the review stand as-is but I recognize that the author has been proven right and I have been proven wrong.

"There are not enough books about Silvio Berlusconi in English! Basically, I found two. This one, and one called The Sack of Rome: How a Beautiful European Country with a Fabled History and a Storied Culture Was Taken Over by a Man Named Silvio Berlusconi. I was hoping to find an objective biography (ha!) and of the two, I settled on the Ginsborg one thinking that The Sack of Rome, in its title, pretty clearly indicated its bias.

Upon receiving the Ginsborg book, I noticed that it was published by Verso Press, a subdivision of New Left Books. Realizing this, I did some research and it turns out that this one was going to be anti-Berlusconi as well. I was grateful, however, that the author never really tries to hide his bias and does, in fact, give Berlusconi praise where praise is due.

Overall, I think this is a decent book to get a basic picture of who Berlusconi is. While slightly outdated (it was published in 2004, well before Berlusconi's loss in the 2006 Italian elections and his subsequent reclamation of the prime minister's seat in 2008), the book gives a decent recounting of where Berlusconi has come from and what motivates him.

Reading it knowing the leftist stance, I found myself asking "Well, why is that so bad?" or saying "Yeah, I agree with Berlusconi here." Even though I disagreed with the author on many points, it was not so overbearingly liberal to make it unenjoyable to read. I was able to parse through the pieces that I needed to in order to pull out something of a sketch of Berlusconi.

One point of agreement I have with Ginsborg lies in the power of television and mass media. Through his companies like Fininvest and Mediaset, Berlusconi has essentially duopolized the Italian TV market (with Rupert Murdoch and the Italian government). Italians watch a lot of television and as such, greatly inform their worldview based on what they see there. The proliferation of television advertising, which led to the bulk of Berlusconi's wealth, also helps inform people and promotes a sense of hyperconsumerism among Italians, even more so than in other Western nations. Ginsborg has a big problem with this, and so do I. I have more an issue with the hyperconsumerism while Ginsborg extends the argument out to include the image television presents of Berlusconi himself.

On the negative side, I wish it had been a little more in depth. It was a great survey across Berlusconi's life and his business and political career. The book was definitely written as a warning, though, to Italy's left (along with the left of the rest of the world) about Berlusconi. The author says as much in his introduction. Since that was the case, the author did not feel a need to be overly biographical. What I mean by this is that Ginsborg only added pieces of information crucial to his overall thesis, which is this: Berlusconi presents a sort-of soft fascism and Italians need to become aware of this. I'm hoping that if Berlusconi stays in power for a while longer, more English-speaking people will be interested and that it will lead to more books and more balance in what is published."

Italy is very close to home

The author of this book knows how to dramatizize politics. "...something important is happening in Italy, potentially quite sinister, and the seeming normality of life serves to mask it very well." If only it were just a fiction. "Silvio Berlsconi" is a great book on the current state of democracy in Italy, the kind of "modern democracy" heralded by Berlusconi's media empire. If the dictators of the early 20th century have been characterizes as "charismatic leaders" pied pipering away their cults of personality, then today's dictator can be thought of as the sort of highly tailored, well edited "iconic leader," the guy who just LOOKS RIGHT for the job. (Paul Ginsbourg includes a hilarious anecdote in the post-script about Berlusconi who, at a recent press conference, showed up with a face lift he had gotten over Christmas and then proceeds to make the most unfortunate analogy: "The communists...tried to have a face lift in order to hide their real identity, but theirs failed.")

As relentlessly critical as Ginsbourg is to Berlusconi, it is hard to ignore the facts of his presidency, both rise to and the policies to follow. It is also hard to ignore the remarkable similarity between the current state of Italian politics and those of the U.S. As Ginsbourg writes, "All this will have a familiar ring in Anglo-Saxon ears."

Democracy is becoming increasingly about television and leadership about being televised. What happens to "freedom" in a community connected only by cable? Ginsbourg makes a couple claims of his own, but the exciting aspect of the book is the fact that it raises such questions at all.

An invaluable reference book

It's not banal or trivial, without being obscure. It has just the right amount of maths to allow an in-depth understanding of the various techniques, without slipping beyond intelligibility by a non-mathematician user. It seems a good reference book for people with already a basic knowledge of multivariate statistics and the principles underlying it, although an introductory chapter is provided for those who want to dust off their old knowledge of matrixes, etc.

Navigating the transition to leadership

Introspection and self-reflection can help you identify your current strengths and leadership style, but your current way of thinking about your job and yourself is exactly what is keeping you from stepping up, according to Herminia Ibarra in this book. You will need to change your mind-set, and in order to do that you need to start by acting like a leader, and then learn how to think like a leader.

The three key elements of this transition to leadership, which the author describes as the outsight principle, becoming a leader from the outside in, are:

• Redefine your job, which involves shifting from driving results yourself to providing strategic direction for others
• Network across and out, which involves building professional relationships with key people outside your own functional group
• Be more playful with yourself, which involves changing your leadership style and how you see yourself and others see you, so that you become a good fit for your new leadership role

In my opinion this book is potentially very helpful for those who are navigating the very awkward transition from a position in which success requires personal technical competence to a position in which success requires co-ordinating and maximising the output produced by others. You can read books and attend classes on how to become a leader, but theoretical input does not really prepare you for the full force of the difficulties you will encounter. You have to start acting like a leader before you can truly become one.

Need a companion throughout your leadership transition? Ibarra's book is exactly that.

In her new book Herminia Ibarra addresses an important fallacy in literature on leadership that looks at self-selected groups of leaders and then tries to deduce how they got there. Rather, she encourages us to look for guidance for our personal leadership journeys, making this book an audacious invitation to act first and introspect after. To support her argument, she reveals recent research that encourages exploration, trying and testing different leadership styles. Her insights on the outsight - capacity to spot new opportunities outside our usual environment - are particularly refreshing and action-provoking. Finally, Ibarra shows that becoming a leader is not an event but a process with its kinks and curves - and this book is an extraordinary companion throughout it.

Best leadership book I've bought

I don't often write reviews, but after finishing Chapter 2 of this book, I realized I just had 2 epiphanies, 2 chapters deep. Unheard of for me. So far, this book has made me realize that I need to look around me and think objectively about myself to start acting and thinking like a leader. Not only a leader, but a person in society. A leader in society. I have sticky notes littering the pages and am constantly thinking about ways I can use what Ibarra is saying in the text to act on improving my relationships (professional and personal) and work to be the best leader I can be - without boxing myself into a stereotype. I recommend this book to anyone who is wanting to improve themselves, both professionally and personally. So glad I bought this book.
