Best Christmas Music Book

This is the 4th one I've bought -- years ago I heard the Christmas Revels CD and was hooked on this wonderful idea of a community Christmas performance with everything from singing children to amateur tuba players, and much rousing, beautiful, and historic music and poems. Now I have all the Revels CDs and songbooks, and I keep giving them as gifts. We sing from it, the piano accompaniment is about medium difficulty, and all the words are there, too. Check out the gorgeous mysterious pagan imagery of The Gower Wassail! We've done it in procession, holding candles, like the pilgrims (or Wise Men) singing the story. Truly wonderful idea, and a grand book.

I purchased this title because I'm interested in starting a Revels-type event in my home area. The Revels Songbook includes many great songs that I am eager to use. I wish there were more specific ideas in the book for how to incorporate other elements like dance - but the book made no claims about anything but songs, so I can't say I was misled. It's definitely worth the price for the songs.

Laughter, love and community challenge a crisis mentality

Not many works of art stay in your mind for more than 20 years. This play did. The plague evoked a crisis mentality in most people, not excepting the church hierarchy. Father Flote, however, is led to form a band of Red Noses to make people laugh; some of them die laughing. The band's spirit of community and the love they show to their neighbors demonstrate an alternative to pious laments and fear. Some adult themes (could be cut for a general audience?). Definitely worth more frequent production.

A great play by a great playwright

Peter Barnes was one of the greatest English language playwrights of our time. His almost indescribable plays have a unique mix of tragedy, history, and every kind of comedy (especially the black variety) matched by few other playwrights besides Shakespeare. Other wonderful plays of his include The Ruling Class, The Bewitched, The Frontiers of Farce, and Sunsets and Glories. And although you would never know it from his plays, he also wrote the tender, magically romantic screen adaptation of the 1992 version of Enchanted April. If you are looking for a playwright who can cover wide vistas and profound themes in a way that keeps you laughing (most of the time), check him out.
