Outdates

Not sure if there are newer editions, but I found this book to be obsolete and antiquated (as of winter 2013-2014) The book refers to the old style of GRE scoring and just isn't up to date on the graduate school application process. If you are looking into grad school, plan a YEAR or MORE in advance. Good luck!

A great idea, but a disappointing book

I bought this book because I wanted an anthology of "the best," classic articles on a variety of fields and from a variety of critical viewpoints, hoping to use it for my introductory art history course. But not only could one quarrel with the choices here, but the articles are abridged almost to the point of incomprehensibility and the footnotes are left out. This makes the collection unrepresentative of what it purports to be about, and useless in the classroom.

It is an excellent anthology, but it lacks colour plate images. Since it is a book about methods in art historical practice, the focus is much more directed to looking at texts. Yet, there are a few black and white images printed in the book that provide examples of the works being discussed. However, I would forfeit my desire for colour plates in light of the affordable price (appx. $30 for almost 400 pages of quality reading) and its promise for longevity for being an oft-consulted book for a serious art historian. I am not sure why Fernie decided to omit the footnotes of the original essays, which makes this only a lead-in to the original texts. I would also like to see Fernie add more contemporary essays with subsequent editions, as the latest date of the essays included is 1993 (recent only in light of the 1995 publication date).

The theories shaping the widely varied practices of of art history are highly contested, often misunderstood, and a `hot topic' in many schools of academia. Eric Fernie has collected some of the most interesting writing, from the Renaissance to the contemporary, about methodology in the practice of art history, introducing each of the essays with a brief summary of its contents. Fernie's considerable ability to summarize and contextualize key points of dense texts in a thoughtful and accessible way makes the reader look forward to diving into this carefully laid out anthology of 27 classic texts about methodology in the arts (like Heinrich Wolfflin's 1915 "Principles of Art History" or Giorgio Vasari's 1568 "The Painter's Book"). Also included in this book is a useful and critical glossary of terms, written by Fernie. Demonstrating the wide variety of approaches taken by serious scholars over the ages, Fernie illuminates the rhizomatic way in which the discourse of art historical practice has unfolded over time, sometimes following an evoluting line of developing thought, but sometimes showing how relatively `new' ideas appear and disappear into the folds of culture's eternal mutation.

Fernie is likely trying to reach academic readers instead of a popular audience, but more specifically, he is likely trying to reach post-undergraduate-level academics. This idea rests on the observation that the content of the essays are quite serious, as well as being of the kind of historical overview that nonacademic, and even many undergrad students, in my opinion, might find difficult to put into perspective unless they have a solid background in both cultural and art history. This book is definitely not for everyone. Those seriously interested in art history, criticism, theory, the history of ideas, or research methodology would find this book most interesting. People who are looking for juicy images, coffee table classics, or simplified interpretations of classic art need not open this book, unless they want to challenge their understanding of how history, methods of enquiry, and the subjectivity of the self inform higher-level understanding of art and art history.

A *Critical* Anthology

Fernie's book is indeed a little gem, a compilation of most of the major players and critical thinkers that shaped the discipline of Art History as we know it today. The format is user-friendly, with an excellent table of contents, select bibliography, and index. The glossary in the back provides definitions that are indispensable for beginners and masters alike. His intros are succinct; they provide a historical context, and distill most of the main points of each reading into a short, interesting, and easy to digest summary.
The selected texts provide the reader with a good definition of some of the historical and contemporary differences between different schools of Art History and Art Criticism. The methods provided in this book are applicable to any humanistic discipline. While not totally comprehensive, the material presented does give an excellent starting point for further excursions into art historical methodology.
That said, Fernie does allow some of his own biases and methodologies to colour some of his introductions, and the selections of representative texts. The critical thinking of his readers needs to be applied to these aspects of the book, as much as the texts presented. However, all in all this is an excellent "History of Art History". I reccomend this book highly to "students" (of any kind) interested in a higher understanding of art, art criticism, and historiography.

About the Author

Susan Phillips is Professor and Director of the School of Public Policy and Administration, Carleton University.�She is a Visiting Fellow at Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge, conducting research on women in leadership in the third sector.�She is also a Visiting Fellow�at the Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy, Cass Business School, City University, where she is working on regulation of the sector.

Steven Rathgeb Smith is Professor and the Waldemar A. Nielsen Chair in Philanthropy at the Public Policy Institute at Georgetown University. Dr. Smith was the editor of Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly (NVSQ), the journal of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) from 1998-2004. His current research focuses on the citizen engagement and advocacy roles of nonprofit organizations, the evolving position of nonprofit social welfare organizations within the welfare state in Europe and the US, and the regional variation in foundations in the US.

Great book. It was easy to read, well written. A great road map to simplify LinkedIn for Advisors. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and picked up a couple different tricks i didn't know. Claire laid out a clear plan to define who you are in your profile, and was very insightful for asking for referrals. Why I Wrote This Book
I got the idea to write this book after years of answering questions from advisors looking for help with LinkedIn. After explaining the same concepts over and over, one advisor said, "You should write a book on this stuff."

My goal is to inspire you to stop being confused, intimidated, or frustrated by LinkedIn. It's not rocket science and it only takes a small upfront investment of time to master. The lingo and interface can be downright annoying to use and I am the first to admit it isn't always user-friendly. But that's no excuse to give up.

If you are an advisor, I guarantee that you deal with more difficult and technical systems every day to research investments, rebalance accounts, and create financial plans. The difference is that you've given yourself permission to be an expert in those arenas. Trust me when I tell you that you're capable of navigating all of the complexities LinkedIn has to offer if you put forth some determination and a little patience. If you approach the effort with a can-do attitude, it will be a piece of cake.

That said, my own Dad still will not log in to his LinkedIn profile unless I am physically sitting next to him. He forwards me the email notifications from LinkedIn and asks me to come to his office and help him log on. Luckily, my office is less than a mile from his, so I agree to show up if he'll make coffee. It's perfectly fine to ask your kids, spouse, or administrative assistant for help until you feel more confident.

However, if you get one thing from this book, I hope you empower yourself to figure this stuff out on your own. Our world has gotten more techy in the past decade, but it is also easier than ever to find good tutorials online. Every time you get stuck, Google what you're trying to accomplish for instructions or watch a YouTube video on the process. No matter the topic, I promise there's help on the Internet.

As a Millennial, I get pushback from advisors that I don't understand how difficult all this social media stuff is for them, and I understand that. But I am actually in the older wave of the Millennial generation; Facebook didn't come out until I was almost through college.

My younger Millennial siblings think I am older than dirt and I don't "get" their social media practices. They laugh when I use emoticons "wrong" or don't know what their trendy new acronyms mean. My two younger sisters-in-law are not only done using Facebook, they're already "so over" Instagram!

Snapchat is all the rage with that age group, and since I want to be involved in their lives (and let's face it; I want to seem cool) I'm in the process of learning how to be the savviest of all Snapchatters. All it takes is 30 minutes of time, some focus, and a couple YouTube videos. I'll have my finger on the pulse of their lives until they take up some new social network next month.

Great guide for financial advisors and other professionals

The LinkedIn Guide for Financial Advisors is a roadmap of how to utilize the network you already have and how to expand it to a greater reach than you previously believed possible.

Claire breaks the steps down into:
1) Making an Extraordinary Profile
2) How to Reach All Star Profile Status & Sharing Content to Grow Your Network
3) How to Use Linked In to Help People and Generate Referrals
4) What to include in your content marketing

She gives great examples and puts it all into actionable steps. These steps could be used by CPAs, lawyers, or real-estate professionals in addition to financial advisors. I'm looking forward to her upcoming books on e-mail marketing, websites and whatever she has coming next.

The book is an easy read that takes readers through a step by step process to build the best profile, utilize searches, make and get introductions and much more. She offers practical steps to take every day to maximize results. Like any marketing, don't expect overnight results. But if you're looking for a handbook to get started and grow with LinkedIn, this is the right book to read.

Actionable tips to help you rule your LinkedIn experience

I (used to) consider myself a LinkedIn pro. After all, I've used it in some form almost every day for the last seven years. After reading this book, however, I quickly realized I am very much still an amateur. I found myself pausing mid-page to look at my LinkedIn profile and make some much needed updates. After I finished the book, most of my profile (headline, summary, publications, etc.) had been updated using Claire's tips.

Claire gives actionable instructions on how to make your profile and LinkedIn marketing strategy stand out from the hundred of thousands of other financial advisors. At about 100 pages, you can read this book over a couple of lunch breaks.

LinkedIn has become the go-to source for prospects and clients who want to research your credentials and experience. As Claire says in the book, Google your name and you'll see that your LinkedIn profile is probably the first to pop up in the search results.

A new way of thinking about movies

Watching positive psychology movies has the potential to affect us in a very positive way. We watch these movies for the joy and entertainment they offer but we also get so much more from them. As you watch the many films mentioned in this book you will be inspired to discover ways to learn and grow, and to use the heroic characters that have different virtues and character strengths to model your own life. Jimmy Stewart's memorable character in "It's a Wonderful Life" is one prime example.

"Positive Psychology at the Movies" is an excellent book for teachers and students studying positive psychology. It could also be a wonderful tool for therapists who could use it to inspire strengths in their patients and to promote their personal growth and self-improvement.

This book is a fascinating depiction of all the virtues and strengths identified by positive psychology and it cites many examples of films that display each one along with practical applications after each chapter. After reading this book I've found watching the films to be a more rewarding experience for me.

Movies Can Move You

Positive Psychology at the Movies by Ryan Niemiec and Danny Wedding is a reference and research book. It is not a book you want to pick up and read from cover to cover unless you enjoy research. Yet there is so much to learn from this book. Using the model of character strengths and virtues from Positive Psychology, Niemiec and Wedding have developed an outstanding way to view movies and learn about your strengths and virtues.

There are two or three outstanding parts of the book that I would recommend to anyone interested in personal development. First, they cover every one of the strengths and virtues. Many times there is a particular strength like forgiveness or love or spirituality that you really can't see as having a place in your development. Having worked with and for top executives my entire behavioral career, I can tell you forgiveness and mercy is a difficult strength to discuss. Most people feel that they are being doormats if they forgive too easily in business. Yet, when you see what the strength looks like coming from a character in a movie, you begin to see how it really can be a strength in your own life.

Next there are several charts and lists in the book that are priceless if you want to use film to learn from or to teach from. There are lists of movies with the exact strength the main character is exemplifying and my favorite - a list of the top 100 inspiring movies in the last 100 years!

For those who teach in the field of positive psychology, this book is a treasure chest of teaching opportunities. For anyone who wants to continue their own learning and development, this is an invaluable roadmap of where to start and how to appreciate a strength using something that is in your life every day - a movie.

What I would like to see is an addendum to this great resource book. There is a company that has devoted itself to bringing thoughtful and through provoking films to wider and broader audiences. That company is The Spiritual Cinema Circle. It is a monthly, subscription based service. As a member you receive a DVD each month with a 4 - 5 films, a discussion sheet and questions to create conversation and thought around the teachings of the movies. I would like to see the Spiritual Cinema's entire catalog of movies taken through the research matrix that the authors of Positive Psychology at the Movies used. Okay, so maybe - just maybe - my strength of spirituality is coming through. And maybe - just maybe - you can see how a strength can help you develop a livelihood. Spirituality may not be on the list of top ten business skills in any education program, yet clearly I have found a way to use it in my work.

Transformative Ideas, Uplifting Movies

Recently I attended an awesome course on "Applied Positive Psychology" at Boston University taught by Professor Amy Baltzell, author of "The Sweet Spot." My most affirming,and hopefully enduring, take away from this course was exposure to Martin Seligman's strength based model of signature character strengths. Since then I have used my own strengths, which I discovered by taking Seligman's Via Signature Strength Questionnaire (free and found at [...]), as a road map to a better, and more meaningful, positive, and fulfilling life. Utilizing the results of this questionnaire on myself, and people I have recommended this to in my coaching practice, has been both emotionally uplifting and an existentially profound experience. For me, coupling daily, non-sectarian meditation (although Positive psychology- see the work of Barbara Frederikson(e. g. "Positivity"- research has found both traditional religious practices and non sectarian spirituality to enhance positivity- meditation, another major Positive Psychology intervention, along with using,and being mindful of the strengths, has been a particularly potent and positive combination.

Niemiec and Wedding's "Positive Psychology does a remarkable job in giving many outstanding visual representations, and related discussions, of these strengths. Having been a film student at Harvard for a while, and being a cinamaphile- having watched 1000's of films over the last 10 years- I felt I was reaching the bottom of the barrel as far as meaningful films were concerned. Also, I had a slightly elitist notion that most modern films, particularly American, were lacking character development, affirmative values and/or meaningful messages, except perhaps in the independent film arena and a small number of feature films (Scorsese's work comes to mind here). However, there is some validity in the notion of films for pure entertainment, which Hollywood has always excelled at. However, pure entertainment movies have progressively over time devolved into dangerous escapism that reaffirm negative values and stereotypes, which I find particularly true in American films that promote gratuitous violence or sex.

International cinema has been better, and more authentic, elevating, and interesting; but the globalization of technology, finance and American pop culture has watered down and diminished the number of films, although films from the emerging markets of South Korea,China,Brazil,middle eastern countries,and Mexico...are surprisingly good but often have limited distribution and access, and for some the subtitles are an issue and the translations themselves are sometimes poor. Also, despite their aesthetic or ideological merits, many of these films offer a, often justifiable, critical or negative worldview.

Anyway, many of the movies, in "Positive Psychology at the Movies epitomizing the strengths (AKA known as virtues, referring back to the works of Aristotle (Particularly his Ethics)-offer wonderful, positive, and very entertaining films in and affirmative and wholesome way. Also, they were very helpful to me in locking in my knowledge and commitment to a positive psychology character strengths based life. Furthermore, these movies tend to be ideologically non controversial and could appeal to a very broad, and diverse, audience, This ideally could lead us to realize our difference aren't so insurmountable as they appear, and the the visual representations strengths, or the virtues, are universal.

Although this book probably is more of an outstanding reference presentation on Positive Psychology movies more than being an original book on that subject. Also it offers a very comprehensive introduction to Positive Psychology's ideas and theories, and gives the reader a comprehensive introduction to many of the major books in this emerging and exciting practical and scientifically validated field.. Moreover, Niemiec and Wedding offer educators an entire course plan syllabus for utilization in the classroom. Niemiec and Wedding offer educators an entire course plan syllabus for utilization in the classroom. which could provide a very valuable creative educational experience.

But, again, the exceptional research conducted that led to these fabulous film recommendations provided me, and hopefully other and future readers, recommendations of many great, and positive, entertaining films that would be impossible to find otherwise. Finally, in our often cynical, superficial, and terror ridden time, this book leads to all reaffirmation of all that is good, noble, and inspirational (and sometimes problematic when viewing examples of the reverse of the values), and transcends the crippling cultural divisiveness of our time. The last point is particularly noteworthy in that the films display no particular cultural political, cultural, or religious bias., and can conceivably appeal to progressives and conservatives as well. Finally, I would highly recommend using "Positive Psychology at The Movies." along with Seligman's strength-based positive psychology interventions, and would also recommend the very accessible interventions of Sonja Lyubormisky's "The How to of Happiness."

Good basic color manual

There are many good things about this book, but what I mainly use it for are the color charts in the back of the book, in order to create my own colors. At the same time, the book is well worth reading. Examples of color theory, that is, what color goes with which, are provided so that you see it in action, so to speak, not only in side by side examples, but in some famous...and not so famous...artwork. As well, examples are provided from nature. Further, flesh color examples are provided...with the name of the paint they are referring to. They show a Van Gogh painting where he used almost nothing but red and green to paint the face. Gray, white and black are explained, sometimes tough subject matter for artists. And if that weren't enough, there is shown the difference between, for example, burnt umber by Golden, by Liquitex, and by other brands. They are very different! This is a book worth having, worth reading and worth referring to. If you are an artist, get it!

Man this is a great book. My wife is into painting

Man this is a great book. My wife is into painting, and she borrowed a copy from her sister, and when I saw it, I really wanted one for myself, since I am a klutz with color. It explains every aspect of combining various paints to get the colors you want. It is very thorough and a big book. Well worth the modest price.

This is the type of book that you start reading and don't put down until you are at the end. While giving out a wealth of information, you are not overwhelmed with too much to fast. And what you do learn is very understandable and giving to you in such a manner that it is very easy to remember. This book brought key elements that I have heard of in several different books, but that I had not been able to connect the dots.

4 Quiver sheaths

This is a very well done book with designs for 4 quiver sheaths for knives. The authors provide methods for making custom fitting sheaths with good illustrations. Overall a real nice book with good instruction. Looking forward to volume II

Very clear and precise instructions

This book is well-illustrated and written. The directions are clear and simple, and the techniques shown are useful and thorough. Many of the instructions can be used to make other styles of sheath as well.

Great book

This is a great book if you're just starting out. I actually read it to bring myself back to basics when I try to get too fancy and mess up my projects. The workflow of each project is spot on and avoids problems in later production.
