The advent of the Boeing 747, the world’s first wide-body commercial airliner, was one of the most significant milestones in aviation history. When the first 747 touched down at Heathrow Airport from New York on 22 January 1970, it heralded the dawn of a popular revolution in long-haul air travel.

Bigger than any passenger aircraft that had come before it, the wide-body 747 “Jumbo Jet” enabled airlines worldwide to slash ticket costs, which meant that affordable travel to faraway destinations finally came within reach of the masses.

To keep the 747 at the forefront of commercial aviation, Boeing continued to develop the basic design, progressively improving the standard passenger 747 in addition to creating extended-range, high-density, combi and dedicated freighter versions, and a whole range of specialist adaptations. In 2005, a major redesign of the 747 (the 747-8) was launched that draws on technology from Boeing’s 787 model, which means the final chapter in the 747 story has yet to be written.

Boeing 747 pilot and author Chris Wood sets his gaze on the 747-400 version and lifts the inspection panels on this most numerous of all 747 models. He describes the anatomy of this huge aircraft, how it is flown and operated, and how the engineers keep Boeing’s best-selling version of the 747 airworthy.

Chris Wood is a Boeing 747 captain with Virgin Atlantic. He has more than 15,000 hours flying time, 10,000 of which are on 747s. He is a regular contributor to the aviation press, including Airliner World and Today’s Pilot. He lives in East Sussex, England.

Okay, it's not REALLY a workshop manual

I am familiar with the old Haynes manuals from long ago... the ones that would show you in detail how to rebuild the motor on your Volkswagen or replace the break pads on your Tercel... Well, this book isn't that... Not even close! It's basically a big pretty picture book... And not that there is anything wrong with that. But it's just not what I was expecting in a Haynes manual. It's not that I need instructions on how to service the pitot tubes on my 747, but I guess I was expecting a lot more technical drawings like the one on the cover... Turns out the one on the cover is the only one in the book!

But it's an entertaining and enjoyable book. I don't regret the purchase, and it's not like it was terrible expensive. It just seems like a bit of false advertising to have Haynes on the cover.

Rather dry reading

As much as I commend Haynes for publishing such a detailed work on this aircraft by an experienced 747 pilot, this "manual" is rather dry and doesn't take advantage of the Haynes format. The technical descriptions are quite detailed, and presumably taken from actual 747 manuals, but there are precious few diagrams, very little in the way of "how it works" material (LOTS of "what it does," though), and the editing is rather sloppy. Chapter four ends in mid-sentence, and a diagram of the throttle quadrant is labeled "caption and key to come."

As a bit of an aviation nerd, I found some of the in-depth descriptions of the 747-400's inner workings fascinating, but on the whole, this isn't one of my favorites in Haynes' "workshop manual" series.

good book, Im surprised there aren't more books on this topic, nice pictures and good information, definitely worth buying, my only critique- would have liked more info about the 747-8, a must buy if you're a 747 fan

The most reader-friendly manual for Office 2011

I'll fess up right away: For a long time, I've been prejudiced against the "dummy series" because of its reader-denigrating subtitle. This book, by Geetesh Bajaj and James Gordon, has cured me. Comparing it, section by section, with Office 2011 for Macintosh: The Missing Manual, (see my very favorable review on amazon), I find both written with equally admirable clarity--the principal criterion for judging technical writing. Both books merit an A grade.

The playful approach of the dummy series -- the humorous tone, the occasional cartoons, the expressive visual cues in the icons, the creative typography, and the generous use of white space--makes this book more reader-friendly than the competition. (On humor in technical writing, have you heard this? Two guys at a bar counter. The first says, "My brother's writing has been read by almost everyone on the planet." The other says, "Oh, yeah? What has he written?" The first replies, "Just three words: 'Batteries not included'." I heard this in an editing course I took at Stanford many years ago. Hey, if you haven't heard it before, it's new.)

Of course, reader-friendly depends on who the reader is. Some readers might find the playful features frivolous. However, the pervasive popularity of the dummy series proves that many millions of readers the world over enjoy its approach in book after book. No question, the dummy series' authors are highly skilled.

Just what I needed!

Very helpful! I didn't get an instruction book when I bought MS Office 2011 for Mac and was relying on finding answers to the questions that popped up by doing internet searches. That got old really quickly, especially since I had to sift through lots of unanswered questions and complicated explanations. So much wasted time. So far I haven't come across a question that I couldn't get answered by looking in this book.

I'm dumb about Word and trying to deal with a long document. Word's own "Help" is of course completely worthless-- literally, in more than ten years of using Word for basic chores, I have never found an answer I needed there. How do they do that?

So I went and bought Word 2011 for Dummies, by another author, and found it confusing and also, unfortunately, useless to me. The author seemed to assume I knew nothing in some basic areas and yet assumed too much in others. I would look up a basic question in the index and find nothing there. The diagrams and pictures were also not particularly helpful.

With online searches, I kept coming across useful information from the authors of this book and finally, feeling silly because I already had the other book, I bought this one.

What a relief! This book explains things much more clearly and has lots of diagrams in the right place in the text, showing exactly what they are talking about so you don't have the usual problem when reading instructions of "Yes but where IS that button?" (Of course it's not in Help!) They don't make you feel stupid for not knowing the names of Word features nor how they work. They also explain the differences from older versions of Word. I have already learned a lot of good tips.

There is still plenty that isn't in the book, and personally I would rather have had much, much more basic word processing information and troubleshooting, and less stuff about inserting pictures, links etc. which is fairly intuitive. I don't want to use Outlook and there was a lot of info on that. Neither am I ready to use Macros and the book did not really explain them. If you are making Powerpoint slides or doing charts, it looks as if there is a lot of info for you. I still need way more help with the basics of Word processing. But this book is a good ally and I'm glad I bought it.

The authors have also got a lot of helpful articles online and I hope will keep on explaining Word to Dummies like me, who really don't want to spend days inserting one document correctly into another without Word doing weird things to the formatting that seem impossible to undo!

This is not a text-book for those faint-of-heart when it comes to mathematics and "techno-babble", but rather a comprehensive treatment of physical properties and interactions that govern gaseous and liquid phase molecules.

"Molecular Theory of Gases and Liquids" is unique in its cross-disciplinary approach to each aspect of molecular phenomena. Chemists, Physicists, and Engineers alike will find its content, the corresponding discussions, and at least one of the various approaches to the derivation of each concept invaluable.

Most disciplines have a text that is casually refered to as its "bible". As a physical chemist studying the interactions of high- temperature reacting fluid flows, (a glorified way of saying combustion), I heartily recommend "Molecular Theory of Gases and Liquids" to that status.

Easy Read, but is just an Overview Text

Was required for a Cyber Crimes class that I took through UC. It is a pretty easy read and relatively short in length. Since the field is so new there is a limited amount of compiled data out there that is available. Gives a good overview of Computer Criminology, but doesn't go in-depth with any individual issues. You will need to track down peer-reviewed studies to get that level of detail on anything that has been researched to data.

Distracting

Using this book for a Cyber Terrorism class in college. I had a hard time getting through the book since every sentence seemed to have quotes around one word which became very distracting. Reminded me of the SNL "Air Quote" skit which was entertaining at first but then became very annoying. It would define a word, such as hacking or hacker, and then when using the word again, the author put quotes around it making it seem like it was an unnecessary word.

"Dreams From Afar - Solo Piano Songbook" is the companion sheet music collection to Michael Logozar's 2014 solo piano CD by the same name. Transcribed by John Zechiel and proofed by the composer himself, all twelve songs from the recording are included. One of Logozar's goals with this collection was to make the music a bit simpler and easier to play for more pianists, and although this music is far from a simple, it should be accessible to most pianists of an upper-intermediate or early-advanced playing level. The music is printed on bright white paper and the print is clear and crisp. The book isn't spiral-bound like Michael's first sheet music collection, but I didn't have much trouble keeping the book open on the piano as I played through it a couple of times (I still prefer spiral-binding!) A larger version of the beautiful CD cover artwork graces the cover, making this a very beautiful book inside and out.

"Dreams From Afar" is one of my favorite recordings of the year (so far), so I have been really looking forward to being able to play the music myself. All of the songs are exceptional and fun to play, but my favorites are "Musette," "The Long Night," and "From Afar." There are no reaches of more than an octave, and pedal markings and metronome settings are included. The titles, key signatures and number of pages are listed below. Very highly recommended!

Not complete recipes

I LOVE bubble tea and this is a cute idea, but it was not executed well at all.

I got this as a digital book, so I can't speak for the paper copy, but some of the recipes were missing information. There are multiple recipes that included ingredients that were not listed in the directions - so you'd be left with a bunch of extra stuff that you set aside for apparently no reason. I'm sure you can figure it out, but it seems like a pretty huge oversight to me. It also never says how many ounces are in a serving, and one recipe says to put it in six cups but it's listed as 2-3 servings - nor how big these 'cups' are.

And I agree with some of the other reviewers stating that these just look like recipes that were copied and pasted from the internet. There is a TON of inconsistent measuring lingo happening, some recipes say cups, some 'cp', and some just 'c.' - and for tablespoons there were also 'tbsp' and 'TB' and sometimes the variation happens in the same recipe! Not to mention one random recipe that used grams and milliliters rather than cups and ounces (and didn't even mention boba in the ingredients list). Plus the boba was referred to in multiple ways, including 'tapioca pearls', 'dried tapioca pearls', 'tapioca pearly', 'pearl tapioca', 'tapioca balls', or just plain 'tapioca'.

In conclusion, it was sloppy, incomplete, and clearly unedited. I'll probably only be using it for a guideline for ideas, not as a recipe book.

Just another but terrible Internet recipe rip-off book.

Encore filled this book with the same typo in EACH rip-off recipe -- "Boil 2 cups of water per � cup of tapioca pearls in a saucepan over high heat and add the boba/ tapioca pearls; stir gently and cook until they star to float." I guess they don't understand the need for an editor even for rip-off recipes!

The same paragraph continues in almost all the recipes -- "Then turn down the heat and cook for another 12-15 minutes. Set aside and let it cool for at least 12-15 minutes. Prepare the simple sugar syrup: boil some water in a saucepan over high heat and add in 2 tbsp. sugar, stir frequently until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is syrupy. Set aside and let it cool."

The last direction is usually "Pour tea into a tall glass and add the boba. Serve with a wide straw and enjoy!" Sometimes they say to add milk and sweetener or ice. Not only thieves but lazy thieves!

Additional typos in this terrible book include "1 cup dried tapioca pearly" "1 cantaloupe, separate" "4 tbsp. Tapioca Balls" "1 cp. ice cubes" "add the bobaand the ice." And finally both "tbsp and TB" for tablespoon in the same recipe they stole from olivesfordinner.com.

The Kiwi Bubble Tea has NO kiwi in it but does have mint, basil, spinach, pineapple and mint leaves.

Encore Books can't be consistent with their recipe format because they copy the recipes from all over the Internet. That's why you get the different terms for the same item and different expressions of measurement. This proves they aren't anything but recipe copiers and not cooks or recipe developers by any means.

The initial information and directions for the "Simple Bubble Tea" are off thekitchn.com with a lot more detail about what you're doing and why. Plus the ingredient quantities are better and more sequentially accurate.

The basis of the different flavors, for the most part, is the type of tea you use as the base flavor. So "Jasmine Bubble Tea" is made with Jasmine Tea rather than the more common black tea. Go to theaimlesscook.com for Taiwanese bubble tea jasmine milk tea with boba (where this recipe resides and was born) for better directions without typos like ". . . until they star to float."

Hibiscus tea can be made from dried hibiscus petals you can buy by the bag at Mexican grocery stores. Or you can use tea bags. There's a variety of tea in bags these days so you can go crazy with your favorite flavor. Cook the large Asian tapioca pearls (they expand and change color when they absorb the tea water) add sweetener and/or milk of your choice and enjoy. Not exactly rocket science.

When explaining how to cook the tapioca pearls, Encore Books changed the ingredient from COOKED boba to "dried" which will be majorly significant. It helps if you know something about the subject matter of what you're copying so you can understand the significance of these mistakes. Poor formatting is lack of good editing, plain and simple.

Go to buzzfeed.com and you'll find 23 recipes for bubble teas with far better directions than these from this pilfering publisher Encore Books including some in this book. If that's not enough, just Google "bubble tea" or "boba tea" and you'll get a lot more sites with far better directions.

My family has had a love affair with boba tea after a trip to San Francisco and discovery of the boba tea. We love this recipe book and highly recommend for foodies or anyone looking to experience amazing bubble tea!
