Basic Astronomy

This book goes over the science of how things work. It tells why summer days are long and winter days are short. Also why things appear to move as they do, stars, some constellations. Great read if you want to know the science behind it all. Simple enough to browse, but with great details if you want to get more involved.

Celestial Sphere

This book was exactly what I was looking for. It is a reasonably thorough and accurate presentation of the basic astronomy of the sky. It explains why we see the apparent motion of sun, stars, moon, and it gives a good account of the seasons and their causes.

It is readable and straightforward without being "dumbed down." It requires some work to fully grasp all the concepts the author presents, but the reward is well worth the effort. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in really coming to grips with the celestial sphere and its motions.

Outstanding reading for amateur astronomers

While I'm very familiar with the night sky this title provided me with a solid understanding of the position and movements of the celestial objects. I should have read this first before I tried Green (Spherical Astronomy). This is all most amateurs are going to need to understand positional astronomy. If you want to go deeper look at Spherical Astronomy by Green and Celestial Mechanics by Moulton.

When World War II erupted, Darlene and her husband, Russall, were forced to go to separate internment camps where both endured countless horrors and degradations. Never to see her husband again, Darlene’s faith never wavered despite test after test. After four years of cruel internment in a Japanese camp, she was forced to sign a confession to a crime she did not commit and face the executioner’s sword, only to be miraculously spared.

This is the inspiring true story of a couragous woman who, despite the loss of her beloved husband, the death of her closest friends, and countless humiliations, never wavered in her faith in God and his plan for her life.

A testimony to one woman's faith and walk with God

"I will never leave thee" was the title to the Focus on the Family radio program narrated by Darlene Diebler Rose. In it she tells about her incredible trials and experiences while a prisoner in a Japanese concentration camp. After listening to the program, and buying the CD, I wanted to know and learn more from this tremendous woman, so I bought the book.
Darlene was a young missionary bride when she arrived in Dutch New Guinea to win untouched tribes to Christ. She and her husband had around one year in the field, winning a few converts but ended up imprisoned in separate prison camps. Darlene endured tremendous hardships yet kept her wits about her and walked by faith, always asking God for guidance. Whenever she lost faith and cried to God, He answered her by giving her His peace and assuring her that He would never leave her nor forsake her. He also gave encouragement and answers to her prayers, such as the time she was starving and dying in the dungeon in solitary confinement and she prayed for just one single tiny banana, and God brought the Japanese camp commander to visit her and gift her 92 bananas! [The story of the camp commander Mr. Yamaji is interesting in its own right, and without giving it away, I'll just say Darlene's living right with God had a great effect on him]. While in solitary confinement, Darlene spent her time walking with the Saviour, talking with Him, and playing in her mind the scripture that she had memorized as a girl. She had psalms, hymns, and even entire chapters memorized, and the right line at the right time seemed to pop into her remembrance and give her the answer she needed at that time. God's Hand could be seen protecting her, as there were several circumstances where she could have lost her life had she not followed God's prompting.
What I learned from this book is that no matter what the circumstances, no matter how dismal the situation, those who know Jesus are never alone. I also learned that a Christian's testimony and the way they walk with God is observable by even the hardest and cruelest heart and can allow the Lord to change them.
This book was very hard to put down, and I definitely will want to be rereading it in the future for all of the inspiration and hope it gives. I only wish she had a sequel telling about the rest of her life in New Guinea [yes, she actually went back after the war].

A Face of Faith

I am privileged to call Darlene friend, and I first heard much of the material in this book from her own dear lips and read much of it before it was sent to the publisher. What you get with Darlene Rose is reality...real, true faith and reliance on God. She told me once that God only gives good gifts, it is only that some are wrapped in black paper and do not seem, on the face of things, to be good gifts at all. But the knowledge of God and His character enable you to rely on the fact that "all things work together for the good of those who love the Lord." She often spoke of passing the time of her imprisonment by "putting the needle down on the tracks of her mind and playing back the Scriptures she had memorized." She has memorized phenomenal amounts on Scripture, not just verses or even chapters, but entire books. Your time spent reading Darlene's words will be well spent and enable you to better have that faith, despite the fact that evidence is often not seen here on earth. Her faith building words will have an effect on the rest of your life if you let them. I can hear her sweet laughter, she never lost her sense of humor, even in the most dire of circumstances. The soldier who rescued her happened to be named Tom Sawyer, after 4 years of horror when he said "Hi, I'm Tom Sawyer" she replied with "Hi, I'm Becky Thatcher"! Read this book and know that you are reading words from the heart of the real thing, a truly godly woman.

Incredible triumph in the face of trials

This heartwarming, inspiring, challenging, well written book quickly shot to the top of the list of our family's favorites! I read it aloud to my family every evening at dinner time (FAR better than watching television!) and we were so gripped by the story that we would often sit around the table long after we were done eating, all other duties forgotten, reading page after page because no one could bear to stop listening!
Darlene Deibler Rose was an amazing young woman with a great talent for writing and a deep love for the Lord. She experienced far more trials in her lifetime than the average American, yet she never became bitter through any of them. She was such a good witness in the way she lived that even the Japanese commander of the prison noticed it. Her relationship with the Lord was living, breathing, alive, and active, not a dead "I go to church on Sundays" relationship. She held on to her faith even when she lost everything else she had. God was her refuge and her security, and sustained her through many events that could have devastated her had it not been for him.
This book is very refreshing and uplifting! It doesn't drag you down into the bleakness of prison or the mire of discouragement, although those things are very real and present in the book. It strengthens and encourages you, letting you know that no matter what trial you are facing, God will work everything for good in the end. I was moved to tears of joy at the end of the book, and now regard it as one of the very best books I have ever read. It reminds you that God never changes. Even when all else fails we can turn to Him for strength and support. I think there are many people whose lives are not right with the Lord even though everything is going well and times are prosperous. Here is a life that was wholly dedicated to God, no matter what He asked of her. She was being refined, as gold in a fire, and she came through pure and bright.
Everyone we have loaned or given this book to has enjoyed it immensely, and I know you will, too.

A new masterpiece

I saw this play in St. Louis and was astounded by it. After the first act, you realize you're watching a well-wrought play, populated by strong, quirky characters, interesting situations, and fascinating, complex relationships, all the things you expect from Wilson. But it doesn't seem like the best play he's ever written, as quite a few people have claimed. With works like Fifth of July, Burn This, and Redwood Curtain in his canon, Best Ever is quite a claim. Then you see Act II. And you realize they might just be right. All the groundwork laid in Act I pays off in such abundantly satisfying ways. And there's so much more to this play than you thought. There is the temptation to fault Book of Days for its loose construction and seemingly scattershot laying out of scenes, but that's where its real beauty lies, in the poetry of the ordinary, in the unexpected turns life takes, in the randomness of living. The organization of the play is in its characters and in its themes of ambition, the need to know, and the fear of change. It is a play uniquely American and just as uniquely Lanford Wilson. It is what it says it is, a book of days, a diary, a story to be told, with characters at once good and bad, admirable and not. It's a snapshot of small town American life at the end of the millennium, in some ways not so different from big city life, in some ways light years away.

Landford Wilson's Book of Days is a real play. Nothing fake about it. First off, his characters are so in deep and contrast with eachother that it makes it a great read. Most of the first act is basically a charming exposition until it nose-dives into a dark and twisted conflict (sorry, read the play). There is a lot of language, however, but it makes a profound impact in what is being told in the story. The way Wilson has each character being a member of the chorus pulls you into the play. The ending is the best: it has you thinking that this could be happening in your own back yard. It can also be debated that this is in fact a tragedy instead of drama. Read this play!
This was a very hard play to put down. In matter of fact, I didn't.

Printmaking in the Sun introduces a revolutionary new printmaking technique known as the solarplate method, first developed in 1972 by one of the book's authors, Dan Welden. He had begun experimenting with light-sensitive polymer plates in place of traditional metal plates, which frees the artist from exposure to poisonous lead fumes. To make a solarplate print, one creates a piece of artwork on film, overlays it on a solarplate, and exposes the film and plate together in the sun. The drawing is transferred to the plate, which is then developed in ordinary tap water. The resulting image appears in the same orientation as the original drawing. This book exhaustively covers the techniques of solarplate printing, describing how to use the proper equipment and materials, prepare relief and intaglio images, make and print relief and intaglio plates, expose your work to the sun, use digital images and photogravure, and work with color printing. The book is generously illustrated with color and black-and-white solarplate images by accomplished artists, as well as clear step-by-step illustrations depicting how to prepare and process your images and plates. The first printmakers were cave people who painted their hands and slapped them against cave walls. Today, printmakers like Ayres still use methods nearly as simple. Others, like printmaker and painter Welden, have created completely new processes, like his solarplate method. Monotypes, the subject of Ayres's book, are created by applying oil- or water-based paint to a flat plate. By pressing a dampened sheet of paper to the plate, a single print is made. The earliest such prints go back to Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, around 1640. Later, Degas and Gauguin experimented with the method. Today, there is a virtual explosion of new ways to create monotypes. Ayres explores the work of a variety of such artists, who demonstrate imaging techniques, masks, stencils, collage, and mixed-media prints. The results vary from traditional images to eccentric, colorful fantasies. In 1972, Welden discovered that polymer printers' plates could be used in printmaking by exposing them to the sun. Draw on a transparency, place it over the plate, expose it to the sun, and the plate is, in effect, etched for printing. The method is now widely used, and Welden and Muir have produced the first book on this extremely versatile art. Both books are highly recommended.

My class enjoyed experimenting with this technique. The instructions in the book are quite clear. When I had a question I called the author and he went far beyond the call of duty to help.
Note: creating large format prints with this technique is not simple due to the price of the plates and the size of the light-box which can be quite heavy to manipulate.

Fabulous book

I splurged and bought this out of print book after looking at a library copy. It has very clear instructions and details, and while a bit dated in terms of today's solar print materials, has much good information. It really widened my limited view and knowledge about solar etching. Prepare for a big hit on your pocketbook however.

Although this seems like a lot of money for a paperback (textbook price) I think it is well worth it. I took a workshop with him about solar printing on glass some years ago. We got to sand the surface of the glass with an abrasive, do a drawing and expose it in the light box and print it on the etching press. I highly recommend this process as it eliminates all the chemicals used in zinc plate etching and the quality of the drawing on the glass reminds me of a lithograph. I am going to make a light box and start this process.

Their destination is back to Ohio where Sonia, an antiques dealer with an important past, will help them end Unwinding once and for all. After a bizarre car accident involving an ostrich, however, they wind up on a Native American reservation. Here, readers learn a lot more about Lev's past, and Connor meets up with Cam, the one and only Rewind. This volume keeps readers updated on many of the characters from the previous books. Following the different story arcs can be a bit confusing, but they are intriguing enough to propel readers forward. Ultimately, the threads begin to tie together, though a lot is left open for the next book. This novel is not as fast paced as its predecessors, but still it packs a punch and is an excellent addition to the series. The third book of Shusterman’s best-selling series finds legendary “Akron AWOL” Connor and former tithe Lev making their way across the country to Ohio to find a woman who may be able to help them stop the Unwinding forever.

Their journey is first derailed by a car crash, and then Connor gets hijacked along the way by a local yokel in Heartsdale, Kan., who holds him hostage. He escapes, but a second car crash dozens of pages later lands Lev in the infirmary of a Native American reservation. Meanwhile, clappers—human bombs—destroy gyms; Cam, the Rewind, charms a senator’s daughter; Risa escapes a band of hungry coyotes; and several other characters from the previous two novels enter and exit the stage. At first, it’s hard to tell where Shusterman is leading readers. He spends so much time with side stories that the novel has trouble finding the momentum of the first two. Readers won’t really understand the lead plot arc until they’re at least halfway through; this installment reads like multiple subplots cobbled together. They do eventually connect, and readers will enjoy the temporary distraction of each one, but they’ll still be wanting Shusterman to get the heck on with the story.

4.5 Stars - Amazing Continuation of the Unwind Dystology

Neal Shusterman is a genius story teller. He builds his stories layer by layer, revealing the plot through multiple POVs. While the majority of POVs are from Connor, Lev, Risa and Cam the others all add so much to the depth and thought put into all aspects of the book. It is like a chess board and he is moving all the pieces of the puzzle around letting you see most of the plays before the final conclusion of the game. Some pieces will be sacrificed, some will only be distractions, some support and others will sneak in change the game completely. But inevitably the game will end with a victor, who that victor will be and how s still anyone's guess.

I'm wowed by this story. The initial horror that I felt in Unwind by the atrocities committed in that book haven't left me and even when I think I can't be more horrified by anything else in this series I'm proven wrong again. From who is really controlling the clappers to what Proactive Citizenry is willing to do or has done to keep all the body parts coming.

Neal Shusterman lets us walk through unwinding's past as the scientist Jansen Rheinschild horrified by what he has invented and how it is to be used tries to correct his mistakes. At the beginning of each Part there is a snippet of Jansen's past leading to a better understanding of the present. Neal is also great at showing what is going on in the present story with some of the propaganda and commercial ads that are being ran. This is a brilliant mechanism in the story as it lets the reader see what society is really like.

Connor and Lev - Are on the run together trying to get to Sonia who might have a key to why Proactive Citizenry would have erased her husband from history. They hope it is a key on how to stop unwinding all together. But along the way they run into a few obstacles and end up meeting Grace as well as a few friends from Lev's past.

- "No true hero ever believes that they are one," she tells him. "So you go ahead, Lev, and keep denying it with every fiber of you being."

It's clear the Lev still has a major part to play in the downfall of the system. He just isn't sure what it is yet.

Cam - is struggling with who and what he is, does he even have a soul is he more than just a collection of all of his parts. Cam is determined to make the people who rewound him pay. He still believes that will make Risa love him and that is the only thing he wants.

- Cam knows beyond a shadow of a doubt he could fill that void in her, if only she loved him enough to let him. It would be the one thing that would make him feel whole.

Cam is putting all his trust into loving Risa. But he still doesn't know that Connor is alive and maybe there isn't any room in Risa's heart to love him that way. He is definitely a wild card because what will he do if he doesn't get the girl he wants.

Risa - knows the ADR is in shambles but she wants to help revive it. Although she misses Connor, I like that she is never so consumed by it that she drops all of her goals to help the Unwinds to just look for him. Risa stays on her own path and while she hopes to see him again she sticks to the bigger picture of trying to find a way to fight against the system. She even runs into an old friend of Lev's along the way CyFy. I was so happy to see that kid again. He still has a very interesting story and it is interesting to see how some people with unwound parts choose to live.

- "You want to know the real reason unwinding keeps going strong, Miss Risa Ward? It's because of the things we're willing to do to save our children." She thinks about it and laughs ruefully. "Imagine that. We're willing to sacrifice the children we don't love for the ones we do..."

Starkey - Is evil and awful and a complete freaking psychopath. But he is a charismatic psychopath who is leading a band of stork kids escaped from the Graveyard. Every time I think Starkey can't do anything more horrendous well he does and I become even more disgusted with him. He is the ultimate bad guy, looking only for glory and immortality willing to sacrifice anyone and everyone else to get it. I love hating him.

There are some other characters that really add to the story. Grace is a new addition to the AWOLs as she is traveling with Conner. I really liked the way she is simple minded yet an idiot savant at strategy and is a great addition to the team. We get to see Hayden again I was worried about what happened to him after he was captured in Unwholly.

There was a lot of development of the individual characters in this book. Cam and Starkey especially I see as more three dimensional now. Conner, Risa and Lev have changed so much from when they first escaped together. My one and only complaint is I really wanted Conner and Risa to find each other sooner, but I can't even be mad about that because it was perfect how it happened.

The big reveal at the end was a little shocking but not unexpected and I really believe that this book was the best jumping board it could be going into the final book of the series. It was emotionally gripping and I stayed locked into the story the entire time waiting to see what would come next. Neal Shusterman has his work cut out for him to make the final book as strong as the rest of the series but he has a great lead in with this book and I can't help but feel that everything in the last book will be absolutely epic.

A game changer for the series!

This is one of my absolute favorite series!! If you haven't read Unwind and UnWholly, you should. It is one of the most unique, thought-provoking dystopians out there.

UnSouled picks up where UnWholly left off - Lev has just rescued Connor from the Graveyard and Risa has just escaped from Proactive Citizenry (after appearing on national TV and declaring that she is against unwinding and rewinding). Cam is desperate to find Risa and to somehow win her love - he figures that bringing Proactive Citizenry is the best way to do that.

The negatives:

A bit of middle book syndrome.
While I loved this book, it did seem a bit like it was mainly just setting us up for book #4. Somehow Shusterman still made the journey feel fresh and interesting, but, in terms of important plot, not that much happened in this book. It was really all about the journey - bringing our characters back together.

What I LOVED:

The moral questions.
I can't possibly talk about the Unwind dystology without mentioning all of the moral questions that are raised. This book further explored the issues that were raised in the first two books (the value of human life, what makes a person a person?) and added one new one: Does a criminal's life hold value or is it okay to end it? (Capital punishment). In this book, it has been proposed that criminals can "volunteer" to be unwound - it's a win/win situation, right? The criminal has supposedly chosen to end their own life and the world benefits by being able to use their unwound parts. But, who monitors it? How is there any guarantee that this will actually be voluntary? And, more importantly, is the value of a criminal's life any less important than anyone else's? These are the types of quandaries that Shusterman is so incredibly good at examining. He'll make you examine tham too, and that is why I LOVE this series!!

Grace.
Grace is a brand new character - and she was so incredibly unique and interesting. I adored her. What makes Grace so unique is the fact that she is both cognitively limited and brilliant at the same time (a bit of a savant, if you will). When Connor first meets Grace, he doesn't expect much from her (and neither do the other characters in the book), but it doesn't take long for Connor to realize that Grace is actually something very special. Her unique intelligence actually saves the day more than once. I actually think that Grace was one of my favorite characters in this book!

Game changer.
The ending of this book is a game-changer. It could possibly turn the characters' world on its head! I definitely can't wait to read the last book in this series - Undivided.

If you enjoy dystopians, you should definitely be reading this series!! UnSouled was an excellent addition to the series and I can't wait to find out what happens next! 4/5 stars.

**THIS BOOK IS NOT THE FINAL BOOK** theres a 4th one called UnDivided that comes out October 2014. There seems to be a lof of confusion about the 'ending' of this one, but it's not the end to the series. anyway REVIEW:

NEAL SHUSTERMAN WEAVES A TALE AS INTERESTING AND COMPLEX AS CAMUS COMPRIXS 'INTERNAL COMMUNITY'.

This story, since the very first book, keeps you involved and your mind going, it's absolutely incredible. The parallels to our own reality are disturbing especially when he's starting each part of the book off with real research and real articles with actual links you can view online. It makes it all a little too close to home and gives you a sense of unease that will stay with you whenever you think too long about how our world and society are run, and who the people in charge are. It challenges your beliefs and forces you to reevaluate your compassion and morals. its just fantastic.

The characters are compelling and you grow attached to every single one, even the 'bad guys' and the ones you don't particularly like. You find yourself reading faster and turning pages at an alarming rate simply in the hopes of getting to a different view point and once you're there you're only led to need a different one. GYUH

It's a beautiful web, expertly executed. A perfect blend of present and future, theres just enough of a futuristic aspect to make it sooo scarily believable and I am absolutely gutted that I have to wait until october to see how it all plays out in the end. The heroes tasks are big ones, they have a lot of people against them (practically the whole of society) and a lot of them are very important people. With how realistic and plot twisting the series has been so far it's a total mystery as to how it will end. And thats kinda scary.

Strong traditional Western
