Madame Bovary (Bantam Classics), by Gustave Flaubert

This exquisite novel tells the story of one of the most compelling heroines in modern literature--Emma Bovary.

"Madame Bovary has a perfection that not only stamps it, but that makes it stand almost alone; it holds itself with such a supreme unapproachable assurance as both excites and defies judgement." - Henry James

Unhappily married to a devoted, clumsy provincial doctor, Emma revolts against the ordinariness of her life by pursuing voluptuous dreams of ecstasy and love. But her sensuous and sentimental desires lead her only to suffering corruption and downfall. A brilliant psychological portrait, Madame Bovary searingly depicts the human mind in search of transcendence. Who is Madame Bovary? Flaubert's answer to this question was superb: "Madame Bovary, c'est moi." Acclaimed as a masterpiece upon its publication in 1857, the work catapulted Flaubert to the ranks of the world's greatest novelists. This volume, with its fine translation by Lowell Bair, a perceptive introduction by Leo Bersani, and a complete supplement of essays and critical comments, is the indispensable Madame Bovary.

The Prose is Exquisite, mining a Range of Emotions; this is no 50 Shades though, if that's what you seek in a Classic
By W Perry Hall
I've seen a bad review of this novel, with which I do not quibble, but one should note that it was given because the reader did not like the nature of the story (and possibly its ending). If you purchase this book though, with the idea that you are getting a feel-good story, a "David Copperfield" (which I love too), then you are in for a miserable experience. The story is by now so well-known that I don't think I'm giving away any spoilers. Perhaps some realize the basic substance of the story but do not expect the ending. In any case, the bad review should not detract one from purchasing this translation, in which Lydia Davis' prose is exquisite. The novel was ground-breaking in any number of ways, not the least of which is the well of human emotions that surge through one while reading it. The clunky translations of the past took away from the novel and the experience of all of the sadness, anger, disgust, contempt, pity and shame accentuated in this edition.

Take a look inside the lifestyle of France in the times of "Madame Bovary"
By Josephine May
"Madame Bovary" comes into the same category with writers like Jane Austin, and the Brontè sisters, with the difference that this story takes place in France instead of England, however one can pick out the similarities in the characteristics of social behaviour, and in the position of women in society and, in the case of Madame Bovary, the disastrous consequences of the lack of education for women and even more serious, the lack of freedom to choose their own destiny. Today the majority of poeple in Europe don't even vaguely remember what it was like to be obliged to obey the rules of father, family and society for ones whole life! And no wonder such disasters took place simply in searching for happiness, however much the poor women hastened in the wrong direction, who can blame them. They too probably had the feeling inside them of "only having one life". If you like stories that take us back into the lifestyles of the past and show us the scene from the inside, this is a book you should not miss.

Teeny tiny print edition! Who knew? I didn't.
By Lady Luther
To say it was a small print edition would be an understatement. If it was listed as a microscopic edition, I missed the caution. I would give it no stars at all but that would not give me the opportunity to comment.
It is absolutely useless - unless one is trying to smuggle it into a country where it's banned.
