In the third theological millennium, more attention to the content and structure of the classical Eucharistic Prayers of both East and West will result in a Catholic systematic theology of eucharistic sacrifice that is not only truer to its biblical and patristic foundations but also -- of ecumenical import -- closer to some of the theological insights of the Protestant Reformers.These highlights of The Eucharist in the West illustrate the great value of this posthumous work. Conceptually complete, but in only rough draft form at the time of Kilmartin's death, it has been edited and prepared for publication by Robert J. Daly, S.J.Chapter one describes the characteristics of the eucharistic theology of the Western Latin Fathers. Chapter two identifies the more important orientations and developments of the Catholic tradition from early medieval Scholasticism up to the first part of the twelfth century. Chapter three singles out the special contribution of early Scholasticism to Latin eucharistic theology Chapter four functions as a bridge from early Scholasticism to high Scholasticism by outlining the general approach to a synthetic theology of the Eucharist which was obtained at the beginning ofthe thirteenth century. Chapter five treats eucharistic theology from high Scholasticism to the Council of Trent. Chapter six summarizes the dogmatic teaching of the Council of Trent. This is followed in Chapter seven, by a treatment of salient features of post-Tridentine eucharistic theology. Chapter eight includes an analysis of the practice and theology of Mass stipends. Chapter nine includes a detailed analysis of Aquinas's theology of the eucharistic sacrifice. I'll slide this one up to four stars. . .

. . .due to the circumstances under which it was written. Fr. Edward J. Kilmartin, SJ died before this, his magnum opus was complete. His notes were left on his computer, and one of his students provided the final editing and publishing work.
This results in a text which is extremely detailed in places, and extremely sketchy in others, apparently where Fr. Kilmartin was unable to "flesh out" the material. Some chapters were complete -- some were more outlines.
Nevertheless, this book is a wonderful discussion of both the history and the theology of the Eucharist throughout the course of Western Christian history. The medieval Eucharistic controversies are covered in detail, as are the issues surrounding the Eucharistic questions at the time of the Reformation and the Council of Trent.
Kilmartin is noteworthy here for his insistance that the task of the Church in the Third Millenium is to provide a theology of the Eucharist which is theologically sound, biblical, historic, and at the same time meaningful and relevant.
While not necessarily agreeing with every point and emphasis, nevertheless, I highly recommend this book. It represents a clarion call to authentic thought scholarship -- and to the translation of such thought scholarship to the level of the man in the pew.

Great for Academic Study

I was a member of Dr. Daly's class at Boston College which first went through the pre-publication version of this manuscript. I found Kilmartin's work to be a valuable academic help to my work on a Master's Thesis on the Lord's Supper.
If you're doing research in the area of the Eucharist -- find this book if you can. Especially if you're looking into recent Roman Catholic trends in eucharistic thought.
