He contends that dictatorship is now much less total than it was until the mid-70s; although dissenters are still persecuted, their very existence is evidence of a significant loosening of repression. However, there is a heavy price being paid for the Chinese economic miracle. The environmental effects of this boom already stretch well beyond the borders of China.

For a college textbook, its a good read

For my upper-division history class of Modern East Asia History, my professor assigned this book for us to read while we are studying China. This book is very well written, unlike some other textbooks out there. It gives a great outline of the important changes in Chinese history. I recommend this book for anyone who wants a straight to the point book about modern Chinese history.

This Is the third edition of this book and was published in 2008 while the first appeared in 1986. In the intervening 22 years much has changed in China and these changes are well covered in the third edition.
There are 11 sections to the book the last 9 cover the years 1911 ( when modern China was deemed to have started with the creation of the the First National Front) to the present.
There are good sections on the activities of Chiang kai-shek, the cultural revolution,the post Mao reforms and the current boom years.
A first class reference book.
